Has anyone ever blown a motor from not porting your wastegate?
#51
Porting the wastgate is a performance mod in its own way. If you set the boost controller to 8psi in the lower gears it may creep to 12+ in 4th and 5th. Since 12psi is the max efficiency range of the turbo you can't set it any higher which means you aren't really running full boost until 4th/5th.

anyway since you seem so reluctant I will make this semi-painless for you.
Take a dremel.
Take a 13mm socket and remove the 2 bolts from the cover on the exhaust side of your turbo.
Disconnect wastegate actuator and push flapper open.
Dremel to your hearts content
Weld a washer onto the flapper to cover up your now ported wastegate, or purchase a new flapper.

lol...Thanks cheesebox, but like I said earlier, I don't really have to put on the exhaust. I may just go with a RB cb and that's it. May just stay stock. I don't care to port the wastegate which saying that pisses people off. I never said I wanted advice on how to make my car faster. I can get that by reading the forum.
It really upsets these guys when you seem to go against what they believe to be a fact. And for the most part, it probably is a fact for their cars and the way they use them.
There are a lot of guys running aftermarket exhaust without porting the wg, but they have the correct fuel backup. I get that ,always did.lol
I just wanted to hear from anyone with an S4 turbo with just the REV II/fcd setup. It's that simple.
There are a couple of guys out there. But they did not want to come on the thread and look stupid/get flamed and that's OK.
One of these guys did pop his motor on a cold night. And he had a RB REV II/fcd.
Just like everyone said it would happen. It's not like I did not believe them, I just wanted to know...well you know. I did enjoy this thread though.lol

Thanks GreenBud It's a great car and I would never do anything to blow it up. I just wanted to hear how many guys with a stock S4 turbo have this exhaust and have blown their motors. I got emails from guys that have had this happen. They all blew up in the cold. That's what I wanted to hear. There are quit a few guys that mod these cars and don't port the wastegates. Check out the cars at Banzai Racing. They do have other supporting mods though. Everyone wants to assume I want their advise on how to set up the car. I never ask what they think I should do. Then they get shitty when I don't run out and do what they think I should do. All in the name of helping out their fellow FC owner. Some people need to learn how to read words, not assume we are all dumbasses like their buddies. I guess they want to help, but it looks like thay rather flame. weird

yeah......... but you have to realize when the conversation includes topics like boost creep, blown motors and 7,000 mile 10th AE people are going to get razzled.
I am 100% in favor of porting the stock wastegate if an open exhaust is installed on an otherwise stock car. The entire purpose of a WG is to prevent boost creep, boost creep is what kills motors. It's a black and white issue as far as I am concerned.
Your original post was to determine if porting the wastegate on a stock S4 turbo is required when installing the Rev II exhaust. The simple answer is yes. The guys who "mod" these cars without porting the stock waste gate either have an external WG or blown motor.

simple with engines. its a pump remember that
more air in more air out, right?
well with a rotary it goes like this
more air in....more air out......no extra fuel=boom!

I like how you guys talk down. If you read the whole thread I never said I was going to run out and blow up my car. I didn't ask for advice, I ask to hear from, well, read it again and try to understand. I'm tired of repeating myself.
I have a stock AE and it will probably stay stock. I have owned RX7s for 20 years and haven't had hardly any problems. I have fun with them and I have never abused or blown one up.
You guys don't need to save me while insulting me. lol
I merely said I don't beleive you have to port a wg with exhaust. Then I'm told I am right by more than one of you in PMs. Of course I was called a ***** for not driving a car hard. I have an FD for that if that's what I want. But I enjoy these cars for other reasons.
That... you might understand. But who knows and who cares at this point.
All I see in the 2nd gen section since I've been reading is how inferior you guys feel compared to the FD section. How the FD section looks down on you. What a bunch of crybaby bullshit.
I have never heard anything in the 3rd gen section that even comes close to that.
You guys seem more interested in flaming people that don't bow down to your pack mentality to the point you don't ask one simple question"What are you going to use the car for" I guess I have to drive it as hard as I can to be part of your group. No Thanks I do fine without being called every name in the book while you try to help me. What a ******* joke.

Just because I wanted to hear from a certain group of car owners and you and others think it's stupid ****, doesn't give you and your pack the right to talk **** to anyone. This is not what you want the new guys that your so concerned about to hear. Is it?
I never told anyone they were wrong. Did I?
But you can't say anything, and your not the only one, without acting like an imbesile with your down syndrome bullshit. And your drouling bullshit.
It's very chickenshit if you ask me. You should try talking to people on the forum as if they are standing in front of you.
Everybody wants to insult here. That is weak!
But your doing it for the noobs. How ******* noble of you all of a sudden. I'm done waisting my time with you kids.

Look you are right though this it is your car and I can only suggest something to you. If I did insult you my bad.
But think about it. wont it be worth it to take the extra 2hrs for peace of mind?

I blew my motor on a summer night at 17psi on a stock motor with intake and 3" exhaust. Cost me 2,000 to rebuild it and guess what the first thing I did after? Ported the waste gate . Boost creep is gone, haven't lost another motor to boost creep since.

Very interesting thread for such a simple question. He just asked about a very specific exhaust/turbo. He was asking about personal experiences with it.
Personally, I had a 3" exhaust and "rebuilt" S4 turbo, per the PO. I blew it in the cold. It was almost bone stock except for the 3" exhaust and FCD.

hey man, dont worry about it, youll be perfectly fine.
see this way in 2 months when my friend dels turbo car is running and he gets a rev 2 exhaust and asks this question you can have this awesome story about how YOU had boost creep and blew your 7k mile motor in your 7k mile 10th AE, which is possibly the nicest car any of us can ever hope to look at. it still smells new for christs sake.
but keeping the turbo stock is much better than keeping the motor stock too, i totally agree, its not like good s4 turbos can be had for cheap. I mean someone gave me one, just gave it to me. So go out and buy yourself another one, port it and save the stocker. Id keep anything i had off of that car personally.
but porting the wategate is the accepted step after reducing backpressure. not doing so is like upgrading to that 7 quart oil pan and only running 5 quarts in it, because it was adaquite before. Its just stupid not to.

The racing beat exhaust is really nice. It isn't excessively loud and it's built very well.
I disagree. There is a significant power increase by opening up the exhaust and there is also a power increase due to the increased boost.
I dynoed my car with only a more effective exhaust running stock boost and had significant a power increase: http://www.geocities.com/jeffguilfoil/dynoresults.html I don't think it's a stretch to say if you were able to maintain stock boost levels, the more effective RB exhaust would have an greater increase in power over the exhaust I ran. Mazdatrix claims a 59hp increase with the RB exhaust (http://www.mazdatrix.com/r-extii.htm). I would argue that the majority of the power increase is not due to the increased level of boost.

non-ported wastegate
I was running an S5 with Racing Beat turbo-back exhaust, "cold air" intake, FCD, stock turbo non-ported waste gate and stock ECU. Boost creeped to 12psi so I babied it....still ended up with low compression eventually and need to rebuild it now (previous owner may not have been so nice to it.) Just have a turbo boost gauge hooked up, the numbers don't lie...if the boost is creeping, you need to do something whether it is fuel related or wastegate related.
