harmful to run w/o TPS?

I'm curious how much influence the TPS has on the overall running of the engine. Am I creating a lean or rich condition by running w/o the TPS connected? This was a mistake on my part (by not reconnecting it), but the engine seemed to be much smoother on/off throttle than with the original TPS connected. Any thoughts?
