The GXL's life time being:

While the GXL sits in the garage awaiting for a new engine.. i've had this idea (and please, if you are going to flame, I do wish you will keep your comments to yourself.)

To keep the car *on the road* and able to do my monthly SCCA races can I put a 12A engine into the GXL for the time being?

The 13b that's in there right now is on a way for a rebuild soon - with a small SP - but also waiting for a new engine to stick in there.

If I don't have to make *many* modifications inside the engine bay - would it be ok (or would I beable to)to stick a 12a motor (GSL) in?

Well, its possible, but a royal pain in the ***, especially for just a temporary thing.. If you want me to get into it and tell you all the crap that would need done, I can (Engine mounts arent the same, etc...) but the short answer, no, ..just let it sit until the rebuild is done..

engine mounts are wrong on a 12A. You would have to fab mounts and other things

Not so worried about a rollover - I've taken the 'vert on very tight turns lately, and she handles like you wouldn't believe.

My parents will not allow me to race the convertible... go figure.

12A in a 2nd gen would be a serious PITA. I was actually going to do it (for various reasons) and came up with this basic list:

-new fuel pump and wiring
-engine mounts (12A mounts at front cover)
-exhaust (custom header or downpipe)
-fan, shroud (or e-fan)
-electrical: dizzy, ignition, hacking wiring harnesses
-swapping flywheel and clutch assembly
-misc (heater hoses, cooling hoses, throttle cable, etc.)

Overall, it's not really worth it...especially when you consider that the 12A only makes 100HP.

Even if it was a direct swap, wouldn't the cost and effort be worth buying a beater 7? What kind of SCCA racing are you doing?

Mr. Cake, wouldn't finishing your project take less time then putting in the 12A?

I was talking another forum member, and he mentioned he was needing to talk to you, mainly to tell you to quit slacking... Or at least post pictures of your new blinging detailed engine bay.

On the topic, If possible, christi why dont you just race your 'vert? Is the fact that it's a softtop breaking the rules? Just out of curiousity. It would be much lest costly, and much easier, to just sit out of the races for the time being.

Snrub - autcrossing...

Black13b - No, I can't race the convertible. The 'vert barely gets driven (mostly on weekends - if at that) .. it's kinda like a show room car... plus my parent's won't let me...

They dont want the wear and tear on the car .. it's in nice shape, low mileage etc... I kinda agree with them.

I'm pretty sure they're correct on the difficulty of installing a 12A. Considering how much work it would be for me to swap my 12A out for a 13B...just no easy way about it, really.

Kinda one reason I was not too hesitant to change direction with my project when an '86 GXL was offered to me WITH a second TII engine and tranny for $400!

So now I just need the shaft and rear end. Typing of which....I need to get back to searching for them!
