gutting precats?
#2
Metal bar or very long screw driver. That's how me and my friends have made cats"High Flow" before.
Just be CAREFUL! of the dust. It has cancer causing stuff in it.
Since thier angled it might be a hassle but just jabbed the insides from each side until it all comes out.
If I didn't have a muffler shop made downpipe I would have done that.
If you have a S4 don't mess with the main cat unless you wanna drive without 5/6 ports.

You have a 86-88? They are back pressure derived
89-91 are electronic.
Well. The easy way is to gun it and feel for a little surge/hesitation at about 3800-4k RPM.
Also if your ports are not opening at all you will barely be able to go over 100MPH(My 88 SE couldn't without em)
Also Minivans will pass you.
With the main cat on you will have enough back pressure.
To make sure they work and help them. I sprayed some lithium grease on them and pushed them in and out then wiped off excesss(don't want dirt adhearing). If they move by pushing them they should be in working order.
=============
The main cat has a pressure tube going into it. Our ports are opened by back pressure(2-3 pounds is good).
Precats will not actuate the ports since they are before the pressure tube.(I think?)
But if you have not pressure tube going to the actuators above the exhaust manifold most likely you are going with out the 5/6 ports.

well, theres no hesitation on my car, and i hit 105mph yesterday easy. Also, where are the ports found? (TOTAL CAR ROOKIE) I dont have a cat, is this just weird, or is it normal?

well, The ports are not visible from the outside, but the actuators are.
They are located right above the exhaust manifold.
-Passenger side of the car.
-go behind the strut near the firewall.
-look at the throttle body and look down.
there are 2 roundish things kinda in a v
***_*****_
**<--->*<--->
***\*\**/*/
****-- *---
had to use something to fill the space so it would look right
Thats a bad example and I'm too lazy too look for a pic.
but there will be a rod going into the middle of the tops. They have little things connected to them to move.
Push on them. If they sink into the roundish chambers then that's them.
If the don't budge then they aren't working.

Gutting is easy to do
1. remove the cats (hardest part)
2. put on dust mask
3. use a prybar, short broom stick, stick, whatever to poke out all the stuff inside the cats. Make sure you get it all and do NOT breath the dust.
4. put cats back on the car.
5. drive around with a smile on your face. (you did take that mask of, right?)
