Is a GTUs differential rear housing wider than other N/A rear housings?
I installed a GTUs differential in my GXL, but the rear (aluminum section) housing where the axles are inserted was not included with my purchase. I have the GTUs axles, and I know that the passenger side shaft (right side) is longer than the driver side (left side).
The passenger side shaft does not fit flush with the oil seal, so I am using the spacer ring from my original axle to make up for the fit issue. The car drives fine, but it has a very slight oil leak on the passenger side of the differential. It looks like the oil seal does not sit as far to the ouside of the shaft as it should which causes the leak.
My question is whether any GTUs owner or other knowledgeable person knows if the dimensions of the rear housing of the GTUs differential is different from other non-turbo (Normally Aspirated, N/A) cars.
Does anyone have any thoughts on how to stop the leak without replacing the rear differential cover?

When I change rearends, I NEVER pull out the axle stubs. I see no reason to do so. As such, I cannot give you a comparison of GTUs axle studs vs other NA axle stubs. I can say with certainty that the GTUs rear housing, and width from axle stub to axle stub is the SAME as any other 86-91 NA differential, LSD or not, regardless of gear ratio. I have a GTus rear swapped into my 89 vert which had the 3.9 open diff, used the same NA axles, and no issues.
IF the rearend were wider, the axles would have to be made shorter...this is the case with the turbo rearend and axles...the rearend is wider, and the axles are therefore shorter because of it.
Perhaps something is screwed up or out of place inside your diff, but you should not have any problems with fitment once you get the stubs to fit the way they should.

Part of my confusion was in discovering that the total length of the GTUs axle shafts is more than the total length of the stock GXL shafts by a little over a quarter of an inch. The CV joints look to be flexible enough to absorb this much width when split between both sides.
I'll have to check again to see if something is in the way or not aligned inside the viscous LSD. Thanks for the reply.
