I can't believe the numbers are that low. Is that the crappy stock tires making the number so bad, or what?

Don't put too muck stock in skidpad numbers; they're a very unrealistic measure of how well a car handles. The smooth, flat surface of a skidpad bears no resemblance to a real road, which is never smooth, and may have bumps, dips, ripples, camber, etc. It's really only a measure of the outright lateral grip of the tyre, which is irrelevant if the suspension can't keep those grippy tyres of the uneven road surface. A car with good skidpad numbers won't necessarily handle or grip better than one with properly sorted road suspension.

Ohh, i was worried to see that the T2 did better than the GTU, yet the t2 weighs more.

Can someone tell me exactly what all makes the GTU different from a GXL.

I am getting a GTU soon, ,only needs a Apex seal.

Enough with the guessing. Here are the actual test numbers from the magazines:

89 Turbo II: .85g
89 GTUs : .86g
Both on 205/55/VR16 Bridgestone Potenza RE71 on 16*7 wheels
Sports Car Illustrated
(The GTUs and Turbo have the identical suspension and tires, but the GTUS is nearly 250 lbs lighter)

89 Convertible: .83g
205/60/15 RE71 on 15*6.5
Motor Trend

88 Convertible: .82g
205/60/15 RE71 on 15*6.5
Road & Track

88 GTU: .80g
205/60/15 RE71 on 15*6
88 Turbo II 10AE: 83g
205/55/16 Goodyear Eagle VR
Road & Track

87 Turbo II: .83g
On Goodyear VR
87 Turbo II: .85g
On RE71
Car & Driver

86 GXL: .86g &.83g on another car
86 Sport: .84g
205/60/15 RE71 on 15*6

87 Turbo II: .85g
205/55/16 Goodyear Eagle VR
Road & Track

89 GTUs: .81g
89 Turbo II: .85g
Both on 205/55/VR16 Bridgestone Potenza RE71 on 16*7 wheels
Road & Track
(The GTUs tested must havebeen beat to hell beacuse it put up some lousy numbers in this test. It ran 0-60 in 8.6 secs in the test. Mazda claimed 7.7 secs. Also, how can a car 200+ lbs lighter than a Turbo with the same tires and suspension produce less lateral grip?)

By the way....GXL, GTU, GTUs, Convertible and Turbo RX-7s never came on crappy stock tires. Bridgestone Potenza RE71 was standard equipment on all non-turbo RX-7s and S5 Turbos and at that time it was arguably the best tire in the world. Its equivalent today is the Potenza S-03 Pole Position. the S4 Turbo came on Goodyear Eagle VR55 which was not a bad tire either.

Yes i do know what an Apex seal is, there are 3 per rotor, they rest in a divit at the tip of each rotors point. But when considering the price of the car, this is not a problem, hell i think i could scrap the car for more than i am paying ($400)

And he is not sure if it is a Apex seal, he assumes it is, becuase it is Blowing white smoke, but still runs.

the 86 n/a did do .88 in the skidpad. I've got those magazines that came out in 86 where they were testing the car.
