Grinding shifting into 3rd?

Ocassionaly when I shift into 3rd I can feel the gear grind just a tiny bit. What could be causing it? It only does it when shifting from 2nd-3rd.

Should I be worried? I'm getting a mazdatrix short throw soon, will that remedy it?

Thanks.

Sounds like it might be the sychros wearing out. Don't think the shifter will help. On my 3rd gen my B&M made it clunkier than the stock.

If it is the synchros what's it going to cost me? Is it something I should look after ASAP?

Not sure on cost. You are lookin at a rebuild if it is a synchro. And will only get worse if it is. Would recomend having it looked at. I would have my car looked soon if I was hearing it.

Go have it looked at. I just got my problem fixed 2 weekends ago. I had the same problem but from 1st to 2nd gear. I just drained the tranmission oil and put new Redline in. The grinding stopped. I only payed $20 for it all. The guy even let me go underneathe the car with him (it was on a lift, mind you) and work on it myself. Most people won't let you.

Anyway, if that doesn't work...Nor help.. ask the other guys for further detail, cause i'm not that smart yet... lol

Synchros cost $27 each from the dealer, I plan a rebuild in a couple weeks. Mine is beyond redline oil. I suggest trying redline oil, if that doesn't do it, time for a rebuild.

If you have syncro problem, you should try what my buddy did to his transmission. As soon as he finds out his syncro was going bad, he did not want a rebuild because it was too expensive.

He understood the concept of transmission conditioners. He knew that the concept behind any transmission conditioners is to penetrate into gears, syncros, and seals to prevent leaks, rough grindings. The conditioners also smooth and protect those parts.

What he did was find the most expensive transmission conditioner (about 8 bucks), bought 3 bottles, and some synthetic (redline) transmission oil. He drained the oil, fill the tranny wtih those fluids he bought. Ever since, he had no grindings related to bad syncros. Also, shifting was more consistent between hot and cold temperatures because synthetic oil's viscosity don't break down.

Ok, I know this sounds weird, but it really works.
Go to the autoparts store, and buy a little bottle of powdered graphite. (the stuff you use to make doorlocks work smoothly)
Drain out all of your old tranny fluid & dispose.
In a CLEAN bucket mix together new transmission oil, and the powdered graphite, making sure there are no lumps of powder.
Put oil/graphite mix in tranny as normal.
The shifting will be MUCH smoother, and the graphite will act as a buffer in places that the gears have been worn down.
I've done this in two 1'st gens, and 1 fc, they were all shifting rough, howling at high speeds, etc. this proceedure cured all of that. 20,000+miles since then, and the problem has not come back.

I think that guy was moking someone when he said he used graphite. I mean, those graphite will clog the transmission.

Just stick with MY idea and you will be satisfied!

I kid you not. There is graphite in both my transmission and rear diff. I do have an extra tranny for my car in the garage, but I have been so satisfied with the old one after putting in the graphite, that I have not even bothered to put it in... but it is there as a spare, and should my existing transmission fail, rest assured I will take it apart and see exactly what caused it. If it is graphite induced, or just my driving hard.
But again, 20,000 mi. with no problems.

BTW, I did not use very much graphite, just enough to dissolve into the oil w/out any extra grains floating around in it.

Graphite is a solid. Even though it is mixed in the oil, it is still solid. Most transmission damage were caused by microscopic particles. If you put graphite, particles bigger than those metal shavings, it would efinetly harm the tranny.
