Got water temp guage..when should i be worried

Ive been reading some threads on this and yes I brought it back from the dead but I am trying to figure out the best place to tap my guage:
1. Before thermostat, is the main reason I brought this back. Ive read that this would be the ideal spot, but where would you be able to tap before the thermo. Since it sits pretty much in the block. (At least it looks to me.)
2. Ive also read placing it in the filler neck housing is another ideal spot. Anyone agree/disagree. The only thing you lack I think RETed was the one to mention that the advantage to having it before the thermostat is to be able to see sooner that your thermostat has become stuck.
Most people ive read have tapped the water housing for a aftermarket gauge... I am thinking this might be the way for me to go. Unless someone can sugest something better.
Any thoughts?
