goop in gear selector and markings...

goop in gear selector and markings...
i have about 3/4 of an inch of black goop inside the gear selector. is this normal or schould i clean it out? and how impoetant is it to mark the ways the driveshaft came off the diff and how the clutch came off the flywheel?

its a need to know type thing im new to the hole not automatic car thing and i need to know if this goop **** is normal and how important it is to have all this stuff lined up cuz i forgot to mark it

A small amout of tranny lube is added to the shifter housing. Over time it ends up looking like what you have. Remove what you can, clean everything you can get to, and add an ounce or 2 of tranny fluid before reinstalling your shifter.
While your in there, check the shifter bushings.
Marking the drive shaft makes sure it is not reinstalled in a differnt position. Otherwise you may get vibrations.
