Good idea to change Tranny oil Filter myself?

well.. i wanna change my tranny oil filter as it seems like its getting clogged every morning..

i decided i wanna do it myself since my local mechanic shop wants like 120.00 to do it all...

is it relatively easy?

seems easy... drop the pan

dump the fluid... change the filter reattach the pan ?

seems quite not hard...

i have the haynes manual... but i just wanna know if its a relatively easy thing for the people that have done it...

also when i called the mechanic shop they said they can do it for 90.00 or they can do it for 120.00 which is more because they hook it up to some machine and get "all" the fluid out... and then finish up the job...

so does it make a difference if i just drop the pan and just dump the fluid?

anyone know if i will need a new gasket? cause if so i need to know a part number possibly?

Honestly I would go out and buy a 5 speed tranny with that cash. And start the swap. Auto's suck ***** all together. unless you have problems with shifting like one guy that hurt his arm and couldn't use a manual tranny anymore. But if your ok then I don't see any reason you should keep the auto.

I got a tranny for ~100 dollars. You would need a drive shaft(35 dollars), cross member and mounts(~100) for competition mounts, clutch kit would be around 250, stcok flywheel I would guess somewhere around 50 bucks.. I would say tha tis worth it.

Never did a Mazda auto, but buy a filter, pan gasket, and about 5 quarts of trans fluid-Make certain it's the correct fluid. If the pan doesn't have a drain plug, which most auto's don't, start removing the pan bolts a little at a time so as the fluid will come out one corner. The hardest, most messy, is to contain all the fluid. Replace filter, clean pan, and install. Don't use any gasket cement. You can "tie" the gasket in place by using some sewing thread throught the bolt holes. After enough bolts in place, just pull on the thread with a pair of pliers and the thread will come right out. Don't overtighten the bolts.

I can't specifically comment on the auto tranny, but if the manual is any comparison, the service is over priced to me! Last year, Goodyear charged me $80 and I swore it was the last time.. and it was I did it myself in 1/2 hour with a hand held air pump. Good luck
