Going to change my diff. and tranny fluid, need advice.
I'm going to swap out the diff. and tranny fluid on my GXL, but was wondering if there's a slick method of filling it back up once it's been drained. I can't really use gravity to my advantage and have to pump 2.6 quarts of gear oil up there somehow.

Bah, I came up with another good question while I was at it. I really want to put that Royal Purple synth in both the differential and the transmission, but does that mean I have to flush both after draining the old nasty stuff out? Or does it really not matter as much with those two systems?
I know I need 90w gear oil for the tranny, but what Royal Purple product would you recommend for the diff? The book says to use limited slip differential fluid, but I didn't see that listed on Royal Purple's page.
Thanks!

I used gravity, and fuel hose for my diff oil. It sucked, because the oil was so damn thick, it took forever to gravity feed it. I ended up blowing in one end of the hose, which was probably very stupid considering the hazards of that stuff, but it worked. I'm getting a hand pump for next time.

most go the route of feeding hose down through the engine bay and into the tranny for gravity reasons.. i tried hand pumping redline fluid in one cold winter afternoon years ago and vowed never to do so again. i almost froze to death under the car it took so long

Hand pump is fine. I've changed diff/tranny oil so many times it's not even funny.
One IMPORTANT THING TO REMEMBER:
Always remove the FILL plug, before draining it.
If the Fill plug is stuck, at least you can still drive it to someplace with the tools to take it off. If you drain it, you're f***ed if you have a frozen plug.
Have fun.

I must say though, that this was the messiest thing I've ever done, jesus. The hose came out of the tranny at one point, causing me to waste a good 1/2 bottle of gear lube, and made me lose track of where I was. I had to just dump an entire third in and then lower the vehicle with the check plug out to make sure it wasn't overfilled.
On top of that, I hit that plug that covers the flywheel access witha wrench when I slipped and it popped in the housing and I was unable to retrieve all of it. I did get a good deal out though, and sealed the hole up with the top portion of a spraypaint can top, and some liquid nails. The check plug only feeds 3/4 of the way through as well, but it doesn't look like the threads are fucked up, but that it isn't the original plug.
After a few minutes of warming up, I could definatly tell a difference though. The shift rod under the boot wasn't warm to the touch, and after the fluid started to get mixed up shifting got much smoother, and so did general acceleration. It feels much less "gritty" now. I can't wait to get another bottle and make a mess of the diff.

the easy way is to get a funnel and a long clear tube and attach the tube to the end if the funnel
then snake the tube from the top near the oil filter and then go down and make sure is in couple of inches into the fill hole.
then go back up again and 2.6 quarts and have some watch as you pour more to check for overflow. once it overflows STOP.
put the plug back in again.
is sucksASS to pump 3 quarts of 90 weight oil by hand laying on you back.
good luck ;-)

I would think that a soda bottle would also work, rather than a glass bottle that he suggests in the write-up. That way you can't shatter it, and it holds pressure rather well. Also it's clear, and you could mark your fluid level for future use.

In my defense, I did know that the S13 could be filled at the shifter before draining it. The RX-7 I wouldn't dare try to drain the tranny until I know I can get the fill plug out.
Just wanted to let people know that it's easy to get caught if you don't watch out.

Nice information, considering I just ordered 5 quarts of royal purple gear lube and oil. I fear that all the gear fluids are original. Now what was this about flushing? Does it help that much? How do you do it? Thanks guys...later

the way i did it was to take a few feet of hose. turn the gear oil bottle upside side snake the hose down through the engine bay near the fire wall. poke a hole in the bottom (now top) put a coat hanger in there and hang it from the hood latch .. it has gravity . mine filled up in a mater of minutes doing it this way
