going to buy TII!!!!
There is this guy that lives a few minutes from me who'se car I've been scoping out for a while. He has a black 86' and a half TII. The paint job is a year old, the syncros for 2nd gear are shot and he says when you shift to 2nd it grinds. He has all new suspension, a new motor with 40K on it, the car has been sitting for 8 months. He says the idle is kinda wacky, and the car "bucks", but it still runs and the exterior is great. He says he started it up every now and then so that the seals don't go bad, but he just doesn't have the money to fix the car up nicely right now, he wants to, but just can't. So he wants $2000 for it. I am going to see it again tomorrow and possibly drive it. The battery is dead and needs to be charged. Does this sound worth it? How much would it cost to fix the tranny and the weird thing that's happening with the engine?

Why do you say that's too much? They sound like relatively small problems and I can probably come accross a used tranny. I can probably talk him down some.

Sounds like you've already made your decision to buy ;)
If the engine was professionally rebuilt and really does only have 40,000 miles on it, $2,000 is probably not bad as a rebuilt engine would cost you about $1,200 all by itself. Add $ for labor to install. So, might not be a bad deal.
Ok, suggestions.
1. Go to a couple Tranny shops. Most of the time they only actually work on Automatics and sub-out the manuals to a 3rd party shop. Plead poverty and ask if they can give you a name, address, etc who the 3rd party shop is. That way at least you cut out the middle man.
Alternatively, shop around for used from a place that will give a replacement guarantee. If successful in getting a good one, that will also be your least expensive.
Either way, you'll want to pull and install the replacement yourself. As much as $400 labor otherwise just for the install. Besides, doing your own work is half the fun of owning one of these beauties.
2. Ask about who rebuilt and installed the current engine. Go there and recite the "bucking" symptoms for their thoughts what you're up against. Better, drive it there and have them check it out. Will cost a few bucks to diagnose, but might give some ammunition to push the price down further.
Good luck!!

The grinds in the gears could be it needs new tranny fluid both in the gears and diff. I doubt they're shot though.... Isn't it if they are shot, you can't drive the car?
Check the TPS, get a compression test. It could be, reasons of why it's bucking is a surging problem.

just my thoughts in it.
