The Gateway Clean Air Program
Well, I finally got my car to pass emissions. For those who don't know, I have an 89 GTU with a S4 Mazda reman shortblock. I used all of the S5 emission components on the car.
Test results: First test.
Hydrocarbons: 1.7207 Standard .80000
Carbon Monoxide: 19.7408 standard 15.0
NOx Gas: 0.6497 Standard 2.0 (pass)
First test: FAIL
I replaced the cats with a direct fit Catco unit and heres what I scored:
Hydrocarbons.0012 pass std. .800
Carbon Monox 0.0000 pass std. 15.00
Nox gasses .0174 pass std 2.00
Either their test results are a little skewed or my car blows out flowers and clean air. Anyways, my car will be legal this afternoon.

The part number is: CTO-4689 It cost me $174.34 It is a direct fit from the manifold to the Y pipe. It contains the precat and a main cat. It contains all the gaskets you need. http://store.summitracing.com/defaul...h&Ntt=cto-4689

Very nice, I have to replace all those related gaskets, so I wonder if just buying new cats would be worth it. My current ones are probably half-clogged and ready to screw me up at some point along the line.
How well do they perform compared to the stocks, and how hard was the install?

My car seemed to have a slight improvement in the lower end, and it made it sound so quiet too. The install went fairly well, as I only had trouble with the removal of one of the nuts connecting the old parts to the exhaust manifold. The bolt holes in the gaskets didn't quite line up correctly, so I had to elongate one of them. They seal up niceley though despite the gasket modification. for anyone that's interested, this unit is sevral pounds lighter than stock too. There are a lot less flanges, and the main cat is smaller.

renewal of registration is every year......
but smog check of the car is every 2 years
so like my car, it needed a smog check this year so next time it needs to smog check is in 2006
but renewal of registration, is every year, so this year i just paid for registration for the coming year 2005... in 2005 i will pay for 2006's registration fee
in 2006 i will pay for 2007 AND i will need to get a smog check before they issue the registration to me

Hmmm, I'm serisouly considering one of these. My FC stinks pretty bad sometimes when I drive less then 5 minutes (like when I run to the hardware store for something). It definatly smells like the cat isn't doing the job anymore. I just have to eBay some stuff to pay for it.
Does it still use the air pump line, and does it effect your gas milage in any way?

The new cats use the stock air pipe and bolt on just like OEM. As far as fuel economy I really don't know because I've only driven like 50 miles with it so far. My current fuel usage is about 23 mpg or so.
