regular, everything else will leave heavier carbon deposits behind. Mazda recommends regular, do it!

Is this covered in the FAQ? +1 to regular. For any car, premium provides detonation protection, detonation protection and only detonation protection. If you don't have a high compression engine or high boost turbo that needs the extra protection against detonation (knock) you gain nothing except maybe more unburnt deposits. Mazda recommends regular for both the NA and turbo (at stock boost levels). People recommend premium b/c of the name and their mental inability to look beyond that. For good quality gas brands with detergents to minimize deposits, see www.toptiergas.com.

when you say regular do you mean 87 octane or 89 octane?

Ya, I think the RX-7 or at least the NA RX-7 is designed to handle lower octane than you can buy without detonating. Go 87.

Is everyone in here a dingus? NA = 87 (or less if you can find). Turbo = Premium. Depending on state that's 91 or 93.

Apparently there are quite a few dinguses, lol. Both the Turbo and NA FC RX-7 are rated for a minimum octane of 87 (R+M/2) with no more than 10% ethanol. If you guys bothered to actually read the owner's manual I wouldn't need to post this information every 2 weeks.

That is basically true about any car, but the minimum octane recommended by a manufacturer has a bit of a safety factor built in to compensate for engine wear, high engine loading, and other factors that may reduce the detonation resistance of the engine. The low octane = more power myth is based on a misintrepretation of Downing Atlanta's race strategy that favored low octane and low spark advance vs. the more typical high octane and high spark advance. While in this particular case the low octane race fuel had more energy content than the higher octane race fuel, this is not always the case, and most pump gas has about the same energy content regardless of the octane rating. The low octane = less deposits myth is rampant throughout the automotive industry due to false advertising by the oil companies many years ago (prior to the FTC banning this practice), in an attempt to sell the public the more expensive high-octane fuel as if it were cleaner. Nearly every brand of pump gas uses the exact same amount of detergents in all octane grades, although there are a few exceptions, but everything sold in the US must at least meet the government's minimum detergent standards.

We need to have the FAQ as required reading before someone can post. Once it is read, you take a test and have to pass it with 90% success before posting. That would cut out about half the threads.......

I have an 87 t2, with rb full exhaust running 89 octane. I'm kind of inbetween on the octane theory. I think premium is overkill personally, so I just go inbetween. For a road trip though I will usually run premium, which up here is 94.

That's not a bad idea. People make these ignorant posts and don't even care that someone with a difficult problem that actually searched for an answers gets overlooked because they pushed their thread lower.

Who cares what the manual says. If you have a turbo and are running 87, I just have to ask why? To save yourself $2 at the pump? Why even risk it. Cold day in hell before I put regular in my 7.

Then you are probably wasting $2 on every fill up unless you have some major engine modifications or are running on a sizable amount of boost over stock.

Figuring that you fill up once a week, that is $104 a year that you are throwing away (or more accurate- that you are burning up).

Do you throw a $100 bill in the BBQ every year for fun?

If so, you can send it too me and I will burn it for you.
