Yeah, it got pretty good gas mileage with the old engine. It was freshly rebuilt (10k miles) when I got 28 MPG on the highway. It was solid interstate cruising between 70 and 85 with the windows down. In "spirited" back roads driving, which is the main other way I drove it, I got between 18 and 20 mpg.
I am curious about what the milage on my new engine is. While I am saving for a proper rebuild I dropped in a junkyard s5 motor with 95k on it. I have put about 100 miles on it since I got it running, but its down at the moment while I am redoing the wiring harness. I hope to have it running tomorrow or Saturday, so I will post my mileage once I get it.

Im not completely sure, but I guessed 16-18. I was getting slightly better when I first got the car. My car is a bit out of time right now and have some other small issues. Plus my O2 sensor is not working at the moment. Wire where it goes into the sensor has wiggled back and forth so much it it just hanging on by a strand or 2. So I highly doubt it works

I just got less than 12 mpg. I did about a 50 mile run in almost entirely 2nd gear up through some mountain roads, RPM about 4000-6500 the whole way. I calculated it out to 10.8 mpg, and that includes the freeway trip home at 80mph. Is this normal for that sort of driving, where I was constantly using the compression braking of the engine and punching it coming out of corners? Its a completely stock 87 N/A GXL.

you guys are all negative nancies. he could have a Honda powered FC with awesome mileage.
the NA gets 17-18MPG city and up to 25MPG on long trips.
the TII gets 15mpg(i have to work out SOME bugs still) and 18MPG Hwy.
I'm glad the TII is getting some TLC the next few months because Gas prices are ridiculous right now.

When I was N/A I got 18 city 22 highway. Now when I got the TII swap done im getting around 14 city 17 highway. But the car is running extremely rich im pretty sure the O2 sensor is cooked. I did however get 25 highway during breakin with no boost!

seriously, my old 86 gxl the most it ever got was 28hwy
now... my 90 GXL/GTUs gets 12 or less, no matter if its highway or city... somethings horribly wrong lol. Motor needs a rebuild. 215k on the stock OEM never rebuilt motor.
