In the past, I have used 2 cans for a full tank or 1 can on a half tank. However, I'd look for other culprits before you go blaming dirty injectors.

Why would you use more than the one bottle per tank they all say to use?

If your injectors are dirty enough to cause a rough idle you need to remove them and have them professionally cleaned, as an in-tank cleaner won't touch them. More likely it's something else though.

Rough idle probably indicates vacuum leak. You should follow directions on the bottle if you want to use a cleaner. the proper way is to pull them out and have it cleaned by a pro. What is your vacuum reading?
Check your timing and TPS then look for vacuum leaks.

I saw this thread and could not help my self, and just gotta make a comment.

Not having anything to fix on my cars this last winter, I got it into my head that I'd pour some fuel injector cleaner into a couple of my cars as sort of preventive maint. type thing.

The end result after a couple of weeks and a couple of bottles of fuel injector cleaner was.........both damned cars started having starting/flooding problems. It got soooooo bad that I made a couple of new fuel cutoff switches for both cars to remedy the problem.

Now for the last month or so, I have not had those flooding/starting problems, so I have not had to use those switches for quite a while.

I can't help but think that the fuel injector cleaner had something to do with my starting problems a couple of months ago. Go figure.

I've used dozens of bottles of the stuff over the years (only one per tank though) and never had a single problem. In fact the car always seemed to run marginally better, although that was probably just in my head.

the problem here is you used the cleaner on a 15 yr old fuel system, and freed up alot of stuff. the stuff that got freed up has nowhere to go except out of the fuel injectors and then they get clogged with crap and stuck open. i would imagine that in the long run you would have to run it at fairly regular intervals or risk jamming up your injectors.

I will say it again, If your car has been neglected with a lack of maintenance in the past. Drop the tank, have it cleaned and sealed. install a new sock filter, have your injectors professionally cleaned. It will be $$$ well spent instead of stereo crap/
