You need to unplug the fuel pump plug under the rear carpet while the engine's running so fuel keeps flowing through the injectors until the engine starves and dies.

I replaced my fuel filter like 2 weeks ago. The filter does not come with the bracket. Just use the same one and clean it off with some WD40, some of the paint will probably come off while cleaning it but, no big deal you can hardly see it from the engine bay. Since it sits almost directly under your brake master cylinder it's bound to get dripped on and look like ka-ka. Un-Plug the connection to your fuel pump like everyone has said near the base of the drivers side speaker tower under the carpet, while the car is running. Jack the car up and use jack stands for safety. I found it easier to remove the bracket with the filter still attached and then work on it. Make sure you have some rags cause that filter is going to be full of gas. You still may have gas coming out of the fuel line so vice grips will help. The filters have grooves on them so make sure they match up in the bracket or else you'll have trouble tightening the bracket around the new filter. And most importantly install the filter correctly with the "in" facing down toward the gas tank.
