My buddy and I were cruising home on the freeway at about 75, we hear a loud boom and then the car just starts slowing down. He gives it some gas but nothing happens and there is this loud scraping noise. We get out and check under the car and the front of the driveline is disconnected from the tranny. The front u-joint busted. We tow it home and inspect the damage. Everything looks good so we decide to replace the front u-joint. We pull the drive shaft from the diff with no problems. I then I try to pull the input shaft from the tranny. I pull on it and it moves about a half inch and then stops. I grabbed 2 pry bars and went to town still nothing. I grab a hammer and try to hammer it out. It still won't budge. Is there some kind of retaining pin holding the input shaft? It moves back and forth a half an inch freely but it refuses to come out!!! Anyone have any suggestions?

There is no retainer, it just slides in, and is held in by the diff.
It may have damaged the splines, causing it to bind???
Don't know, I've never heard of this problem before.

be glad the car didn't flip. Scariest thing about driveshafts, front ujoint busts and you're in a world of hurt if you catch a road-drip wrong.
BTW you can't replace the ujoints... at least not officialy. They are unreplaceable, you cant find replacements, they "don't exist". Its under debate however.
There is no retaining pin, it just slides in and out. My guess is someonthing went south on the forward portion of the driveshaft. Maybe a bent fin is causing the shaft to get stuck.
