Front cover help on S5 T2
This is my jspec engine that I am swapping into my 87 TII.
I got everything hooked up and the car starts, dispite the fact that it's idling irratically and dies when I give it gas, it also leaks oil.
The oil seems to be coming somewhere behind the waterpump. There are 2 choices, the turbo oil feed line and the front cover. I inspected the turbo oil line and it's fine, that leaves the front cover.
Here is a pic of the front cover.
There is a gap between the front housing and the front cover. Is that normal or is that my leak? There is only a gap there, everywhere else the front cover is mated to the front housing perfectly.
I can see the gasket in there but it kind of goes lower than the edge of the front cover.
Do you guys think I have a:
1) Warpped front cover?
2) Warpped front housing?
3) Bad front cover seal?
By the way, on the top 2 front cover nuts, I try to tighten them more and they turned 1/4 of a turn. Do you guys think it'll help?
TIA.

I dont know about he warped thing, i think that would be hard to do. My experance has been the paper seal never holds right. Use liquid gasket on the entire front cover even where the o ring goes between the front cover and the front intermediate housing, be sure to use the O ring too. I think that should solve your problem

All of the oil should be residing in your oil pan. The gasket around that side of the front cover does look like it has dropped or something. Even though it shouldnt have since it is a formed gasaket. But like Ridge said, use a gasket sealer along with a new oem gasket. Youll also need an impact wrench to get your front pulley bolt off. And make sure you get it tightened down to the correct 89ftlbs it calls for. The easiest way to do that is to have the car in gear to keep the shaft from turning, and someone in the car holdding the brake down so the car wont roll on youas your tightning that pulley bolt.

The front cover is not full of pressurized oil - inside is the oil pump and the like.
Considering you can't see the top of the front cover with the water pump housing on, I would glop some RTV on the outside of that crack and call that a day. I seriously doubt that's your oil leak.
Having done NUMEROUS front cover jobs, most out of my own stupidity/learning curve, I highly recommend not doing one . There's a LOT that can go wrong when pulling the front cover, and you have to remove a lot to get to it.
Do some more research on your oil leak first.

That is actually the area where the oil is coming from...
A small stream of oil comes from under the waterpump and that is the only area where oil flows...
I have cleaned and tested 3 times to verify that's where the oil is coming from.
So you are saying some RTV might fix the leak for a short period of time??
