front 4 piston caliper mounting bolt shims

Ok need to know whether the caliper mounting bolts shims go on the inside of the caliper (on the pad side) or the outside of the caliper (mounting bolt side). Does it even matter?

I've seen people run without them, but they are usually installed between the caliper and mounting hole(on the spindle assembly).

I was told they're isolators to inhibit corrosion.
Dunno if that's correct, my car doesn't have 'em.

Parts diagram definitely shows them outside of the caliper. Come to think of it, I don't even remember on which side of the spindle I installed mine on.
