Question fresh rebuild still won't stay running!

a little background, though i have posted about this before; free 88 se automatic with a blown engine (one iron housing blew out (@ 109k miles) by the innermost coolant seal, but ran), rebuilt engine from an 86 using one rotor housing from a later turbo and dropped it in.

the car ran initially, but would die if i pressed the throttle too abruptly or if i tried to put it in gear. despite that it ran well and sounded even better. then i noticed a coolant leak, which i fixed with the proper o-ring (one of my rotor housings was from a turbo, so it had an unused cooling port by the intake which wasn't sealed).

after the coolant leak was fixed it was worse than ever. at first it wouldn't even start, but i readjusted my tps, found a hose disconnected from a check valve leading to the exhaust, and eventually performed the "advanced" flood start procedure. yeah, the one with the atf and new ngk plugs. all of a sudden she spins to life, i'm yelling with joy because the car is running better and sounds smoother than ever... besides starting for the first time in weeks. the rev's drop from 3k to 1500 and all seems good until after half a minute at 1500, then the rev's slowly, but steadily drop down and then it cuts off! it kept doing this several times, then would only run for a second or two and immediately drop down and die after i tried tinkering with the timing and idle position.

one thing that concerns me is that while the car was running after the flood start procedure i noticed that there was a bit of smoke coming from somewhere between the exhaust manifold and the end of the cats (i know it's normal to smoke because of the atf and excess gasoline from flooding). this also happened when i first got the car and it was blowing water and all kinds of **** out the exhaust. the steam and exhaust were coming up into the car through the auto shifter console. i know i need to fix a leak... but should i worry about that now? could that be the source of my problems?

Lightbulb update

i will be installing a new complete cat system from discountconverter.com soon and will post the results. there is a huge leak in the first cat section... hopefully this will fix the problem. otherwise, i will have done something i needed to do anyways and will continue to troubleshoot and post.

alright, decided to wait on the cats... i ran the car without exhaust and same thing happened... exactly. so yeah... changed out the MAF sensor with a newer one... didn't change anything either.

now i'm running it again (same rev and then slowly drop) and i'm checking the timing with a light gun and the leading spark is fine, but T1 fires kind of irregularly (the plugs are fine) and T2 fires regularly, but is nowhere near the timing marks on the main pulley... anyone have a suggestion?
