freon removal

hello all im ready to remove my air condition equipment, since I hardly ever use it and it rarely works Im willing to gain in shedding of some weight on the car. my only concern is the remaining freon in the system. the manual says to have it discharged, well I dont want to pay an arm and a leg just to remove this gas so if possible could I do it myself? also what parts consist of the air condition? just want to make sure I remove all of it. Since im in the process, would removing the power steering be a bad thing? I know that it would shed more weight but, would it affect performance in any way? thanks in advance------Ren

1. You will need to have the R-12 evacuated by shop.

2. The AC consists of the condensor (in front of rad), compressor (below PS pump), hoses and the evaporator (under dash)

3. About 50 LBS to be lost removing it. No power increase.

4. If you have no specific reason to remove the power steering, leave it. If you really want to remove it, remove the pump, hoses, rack and computer (under dash). Then replace with the manual rack.

well the polluting way would be to just vent it to the atmosphere,etc..
or you can take it to a shop and have them remove it

as far as power steering goes I removed ac,ps,everything and it handles perfect
but mine is no daily driver....

How much does it cost to remove all the R-12? With as much as R-12 costs these days, you would think THEY would pay US to empty our systems
