Found a harbor blue S5 'vert for cheap. Help me decide.
I heard about this vert for sale and went to check it out today. It's probably going to be for my father and not me, but I'd likely do alot of the work on it.
made 10/89
$800 price tag
The good:
-BBS wheels with caps in VGC
-Interior is in good condition ignoring the torn driver's seat... all I can see missing are the center vents
-factory CD
-paint on undamaged panels is in good condition (front fenders, one rear fender, most of front bumper, rear bumper, trunk)
-110k miles
-manual transmission (S5 ribbed case)
-KYB struts with some purple springs
-exhaust doesn't appear to be rusted out, mufflers replaced
-no rust (common for Virginia)
The bad:
-hood is probably fubared
-top needs to be replaced (I've done tops on miatas before and can get a robins top cheap)
-minor body damage, most has been molded and sealed already, just needs paint:
-rear quarter needs to be painted and blended
-1 headlight cover needs paint or to be replaced
-1 tail light is cracked
Mechanical:
-***it appears that someone put in a S4 engine for whatever reason. The injector harness was spliced to accomodate the S4 injectors, split air pipe is S4, intake is S4, forgot to check how the OMP was swapped ***
-plugs were pulled and showed no signs of moisture
-cooling system was pressurized, but the rad cap was leaking. It did not appear to leak anywhere else or internally.
-spark plug thread on rear housing needs to be repaired
-trans shifted freely
-compression: ~100 on front ~90 on rear (low rear might be due to spark plug threads, the tester would not fully screw in...I may get a thread repair tool for it and test again)
So, needless to say, the S4 engine is a big disappointment... I'd either like to get it back to S5 or do some kind of swap (turbo 13b or LSX) even though it probably runs. The body work is not a big deal and could probably be sorted out by someone I know for less than usual $.
