fog light problems...

ok so my right side fog light doesnt work, but the left side does, so to eliminate whether its the wiring in the car, or the actual fog light i switched the lights and put the right one on the left side and the left one onto the right side... it turns out its the actual fog light, so i pulled it apart, and the light seems to be in good shape. the little coil inside the bulb isnt burnt out, and its still connected... so what i did was take the red wire(one thats screwed in with one of the screws) off and replaced it with new connectors and wire, and put it back in, i pluged it in and went to turn the foglights on and i start to see smoke coming from that area... so im like .... ok ... wtf just happend here. i dont understand what the problem could be if the bulb isnt burnt out.... can anyone help me out?

Before you go hot wiring things, switch the bulbs. If the right side doesn't work with the left side bulb in it, it's the wiring. If the right side bulb doesn't work in the left side light, it's the bulb. Got it?

Check the continuity of the bulb with a multimeter. Just because the filament looks intact, doesn't mean it's OK.
