Maybe I should qualify my statements more...
I'm talking about stuffing a muffler or pre-silencer further up front to where at least the main cat is. I've seen Flowmaters in that position blow their welds out. A "cherry bomb" does not mount in the rear where the stock mufflers are, and these are basically pre-silencer type mufflers. You can put an aluminum foil muffler back there on a rotary, and it'll hold up (well, until you get a backfire).
I dunno how to comment on the endurance racing argument. The majority of wear&tear is due to heat cycling and not elevated heat levels. Typically, the highest heat levels are due to the STOCK ECU going into CLOSED-LOOP mode, which triggers lean AFR's which race cars almost never see. I would demand proof that a race car would be harder on the exhuast system versus a daily driver...
