Flat Black or not?
now that i figured out that everything thats wrong with my RX-7 are things that go wrong with all 87 RX-7's...... Should I paint it flat black? or what are some other colors that look good? Mine is phantom grey right now.. but the paint is fading off the hood and roof....
even though it doesn't really look like it much from the pic....

I'm planning on spraying mine with some Krylon dark-grey primer. My 89 GTU has a few multi-color bodypanels on it; and I think it makes it look tough anyway... or maybe it's the empty engine bay?
...anyway, be like me.... the cool kid... and paint it flat SOMETHING

Flat black would be real tight, you gona use piant, or primer? It would also look tight if you painted the wheels flat black as well, if would be like a mazda version of night rider

i was probably going to do the spray paint flat black.... it actually looks pretty good.... at least it did on the Silvia in super street or import tuner.... i still don't remember which magazone it was though....
the flat black spray doesn't show spray strokes as bad as other spray paints and if you spray enough it looks like its not spray at all.... and its cheap... lol.... i got a budget right now....

The magazine was SCC and they did a WRX btw. Honestly I think I'de rather pay maako for a average paint job (Haven't been around alot of people with good experiences). Or have something along that matter. Flat black after that SCC issue seems to be very 'in' at the moment. And it looks dull to me (in my opinion).

Keep in mind that primer does not seal the body, it will absorb moisture. Rust will start under the primer and you may not even see it. Any decent autobody paint store can 'de-gloss' your top coat to whatever percentage of gloss you want.
I'm doing a widebody FB and really like the matte finish of the black epoxy primer. I have concidered a de-glossed clearcoat over the epoxy, since the epoxy is not UV resistant. My paint supplier says he can degloss the clearcoat to whatever degree I want.
If you want to run around with the primer look, at least seal the body with and epoxy first.
Speaking of which, it's time to go back out to the shop and epoxy some more parts.

I painted mine flat black last summer, the factory "royal maroon metallic" was light red, bright pink, and even white in spots.
I like the flat black, but it shows dirt and holds oil stains.
It's a temp job though, this spring I'm sanding it down, fixing some body problems and spraying it factory brilliant black.

Primer is hard to make look good, it absorbs water, if you touch it it'll leave a mark etc... It also is not the desired surface to paint over... If you want to have the car painted NICELY in the future, for cheaper, I'd suggest you don't primer OR paint the car flat black. These surfaces are not the best for painting over. The stock paint is the best surface to have repainted. If you're planning to have the car 'no gloss' black for a while, I'd go for the flat black PAINT not primer. Primer kind of sucks... I've heard from a friend who is a professional painter that primer is best if it's used in small areas, like over Bondo etc. NOT for the whole car on top of the stock paint. I guess, if you want your car flat black and for a long while... Do it. Use paint not primer. But if you're considering flat black as a temporary improvement until you can afford a good paint job, don't do it-- it'll just have to be removed (more labor = more $). BTW, primer also is typically "greyer" (which is ghetto). Go flat black paint. Buy like 10-15 cans, make a little 'booth' using that clear plastic, go slow, do the whole car yourself, or with a friend you TRUST to do a good job. Start with the roof and hood (they're pretty hard to do). DON'T soak any area. Make nice even strokes working your way ALL the way across the car in one motion. Overlap 1/2 way into the previous paint. Sand lightly and try and go an EVEN depth everywhere, Don't use a power sander on the creases, hard curves etc. Do these areas by hand. Don't go to deep. Mask very good, everywhere you half-*** masking you'll see when the masking tape and newspaper comes off later. Good luck

yeah i need to to some body work this spring to stop some cancer like rust in my wheelwells and i'm also adding a aluminum hood and a wing so instead of mismatched colors it'll be all flat balck but the rims gloss black and many car shows have a class for unfinished cars that are like over a certain percent primer and i think i can take that at the OC car show here in md if mines done right

My buddy just painted his lowrider s10 flat black paint and it looks awesome. 300$ for all the paint and he did all the prep and painted it himself. I think it looks nice, but hard to keep clean.

My friend is going to paint his TII flat black. He already did a super good job at painting the wheels dark gunmetal grey, and he's been planning on painting his car flat black ever since I showed him my SCC magazine where they painted that STI. Now, everybody's doing it. Jump on the bandwagon!

if i had enough money to get my car painted professionaly, i would go with something other than flat black.... lol.... professional painting here is pretty expensive, and i could be spending that money on things like getting my car running good...
