Just buy the hood latch assembly from a car with an aluminum hood. It has a lighter tension spring than the hood latches on cars with steel hoods. The spring is there to push up on the hood when you first pop it, and since the steel hood weighs twice what the AL one does, they had to use different springs. Too strong of a spring will make the hood a bitch to shut due to all the upward force. Too weak of a spring will make the hood not pop up when you pull the release.

IF the latch refuses to latch at all, then it needs to be adjusted. You can oval the holes slightly to gain more adjustment. IF you drop the hood from about 18" height and it doesnt shut, then there is a problem.

where do I look at to find the spring in the hardware store, I hardly go in there and don't know what to ask for when it comes to this? please help me out.

or refer to you RotaryResurrection, I can do that too but seems like is easier to go to a hardware store and get different ones and test it out.

Despite these guys' advice, I dont know about the whole hardware store deal. I have fooled with a few hood latch springs, and those things are pretty heavy. It would be hard to find a hardware store spring suited to this application, and you'll have to do some custom cutting and bending of the ends even if you do find something remotely similar. These things take a LOT of force to try and remove/install from the latch assembly. Hardware stores do not carry a wide selection of springs.

I strongly recommend that you simply buy whichever hood latch you need and go on with life. But, some people enjoy a challenge, so to those people...whatever.
