Well if the engine is cold when they are compression tested and it is not spinning fast enough to build proper compression then wouldn't a reading of 110 be amazing, and if you did it the proper way it would be much much higher? Seems to me if it is tested when cold and is fine at that point then there is no way it can be bad compression, just baby it for a while, no WOT, nothing above 5k rpm, should not be any different then breaking in a new engine and then it should be fine. Any reason why this is not true? If so please let me know.....I am an information ***** and need as much as possible.

What do you think: There is a big enclosed, temperature and humidity controlled wharehouse full of never raced, properly maintained, low milage high compression engines. Just waiting to be sold to you for the low low price of 995??
GET REAL!!!!
Every J-Spec I have seen has been literly yanked from the donor vehicle. The wire harness is cut, the mounts were not unbolted before the engine was yanked!
Most J-specs suffer some form of shipping damage, Bent Throttle shafts, deformed intercoolers, bent pullies, damaged oil pans, broken intake pipes. etc. etc.
Another tidnit. Everyone will agree that allowing a Rotary to sit is detrimental to its health. Lets look at the timeline for a J-Spec:
Day 0: Car is wrecked/disposed off
Day 5-14: Car makes it thru legal paperwork and goes to junkyard
Day-14 thru 30: Engine is yanked from car
Day 45: Engine is sold to exporter
Day 45-90: Engine sits while exporter gathers enough for a container
Day 90: Container is loaded and sent to the docks
Day 90-120: Container waits at dock (Exposed to salt water laden air)
Day 120: Loaded on ship
Day 120-145: Trip to US
Day 145: Unloaded at customs
Day 145-160: Container finally clears Customs
Day 160: Delivered to Importer
So at best this engine has taken 160 days to get ready to sell

ok first off thanks for all the replies....
the reason im going to go with a j-spec is becuase i think my turbo on my car is fried.....it was smoking when the engine blew so im sure something got sucked up in there....and even if the turbo isnt bad, its got over 188,000 miles on it so it needs to be replaced period...
j-specs come with the turbo so that problem is solved...
i would just get a rebuilt engine, but then i would have to get a new turbo or have mine rebuilt....which on top of the money spent on the engine rebuild and shipping would be too expensive for what i can afford right now
the other reason is when i get this engine i'll get it in the car and i still have the core to the blown engine which i can rebuild over the summer the right way, with time and good quality parts.....i want to use 3mm seals and all that jazz.....but most importantly if i use my blown engine and rebuild it myself it will be a HUGE learning experience and that alone is of high value to me...
i would also like to thank $150FC for being the only one to actually answer my question......thank you....
everyone else seemed to just jump on the slam me bandwagon
and by the way im not insulting kevin.....although i dont like how everytime i make a post about my blown engine he chimes in with something smart to say about my situation...im not going to apoligize for not using him as my engine re-builder
i by no means ignore any info given to me on this forum, because, i have solved many problems with my 7 with help from the great people that use this board.....
i just dont think its right to have to have to take **** from someone, just cause they know more about an rx-7 than i do...especially since i have tried being nice to him before and apparently that doesnt matter to him....instead of helping he is just trying to make me feel stupid for not going to him with my engine problems.
just because he knows engines, by no means gives him the right to be an *** towards me every chance he gets......
all you have to do is read his replies in my previous threads and you'll know what im talking about....no help....only smart *** replies
theres just no need for that is my basic point......

I have, and have seen friends, install engines from junkyards/cars that sat (jspecs are the same) and had them a) be bad before they were installed or b) die within 3 months of installation, more often than not 1 month or less, no matter how they were driven. Do you really want to go through that? Apparently so. Dont listen to us. We're just slamming you.

I would *really* like to know what you're talking about now. Let's see some examples.

just search my threads that you have responded in......if you didnt mean them as smart replies then they sure came off that way to me....
instead of answering my questions you just made it seem like i was retarded for considering other options...
im not considering getting a jspec just because of the name.. i could care less what the hell they are called, its because if i can get a full engine with a warranty of 40k + miles for under a grand....thats all i can afford so im stuck with that option...im not choosing to get a jspec because i want one, im CONSIDERING it because it fits my budget more....
this thread has become nothing more than a talking contest between you and I so im just gonna stop...there no more info i can derive from this spitting contest

forget searching. . .
but you are by far not a business man
you continuously flame someone for not going with YOU.
I'd like to see where??
like your engines are so great.
1200 dollars is mighty cheap for a rebuild. i wonder how you do it for so cheap.
hes ASKING what the deal is with the j-spec. most of you (even kevin) are right about their history. . . the information is more than likely appreciated,
but when somebody gets burned buy a "business man" there seems to be something wrong.
did i talk **** about you for that?
come on man, give the guy a break and get your "professional" fingers out of your ***.

"and is there anything else that i will have to do before i can just pop this motor in??"
A direct answer to this question: You can prepare to "pop" out that 950 + 175 or so for shipping, and put another in after it goes "BOOM". You asked for the experienced forum members to give you their experience, we have AND NOW you don't like what you are hearing, so you chose to whine and groan even louder. Your only guarenntee you will get on a JUNK-SPEC is that it will start up. PERIOD! Good luck in what sounds like a long endevour!

Kevin,
I hate to interrupt your fun, but I am not a "kiddie" and I would like your input.
I am putting together the pieces for a 85 GSL-SE conversion to turbo. And I was seriously considering a J-spec, simply because of the long block. I don't have a rebuildable core with the turbo and all of the accessories.
Any thoughts?
dave

Is just the seals that die from sitting before and during shipping.

Use the Jspec as your good useable core. Once rebuilt they are very good.

You can do it once by doing it right or Half-*** around and keep doing it. Why do you think Rob at Pineappleracing went to automatically using new housings in a Warrenteed Rebuilds? He was losing money buying Junk-Specs to tear down and clean only to end up with shitty *** clean parts.
