A few questions about a turbo..
I just took the stock turbo and manifold off of my 88 Turbo2. I will not be using this anymore, as I have bought a S5 turbo and manifold. I am selling it, but I have a few questions, so I can accurately desribe the condition. 1st off, a blade or 2 on the compressor side is slightly bent. Is this a big deal? 2nd, how do you check for shaft play? Anything else that I should look over ? Basically I just need to know the main things to check when looking over a turbo. I drove the car, and it seemed to boost fine, it wasnt leaking oil or anything like that, and the car was equipped with a turbo timer, so it was always allowed to cool down before shutdown. Ill get a pic up ASAP of the bent blades.. Thanks

Bent blades are NEVER good. Poor flow, and balance is thrown off; turbo life is quite decreased. How did it get bent is the better question? Contact with the housing? Apex seal blarf out and contact it?
Check for shaft play by grabbing onto the impeller nut, and wiggle it back and forth, it should hardly move. It should not contact the compressor housing, or come close. It should spin freely. There are methods to check exactly how much play exists, but there is no agreed "tolerable" amount, so really, it is a judgement call.
Also check for cracks on the exhaust housing. Small ones are tolerable, large ones are not. keep in mind cracks will only get bigger.

Thats just the thing, I dont know how it was bent. The car seemed to drive and run fine, and as far as I know, the stock engine and the stock turbo. There seems to be no shaft play whatsoever ( I didnt know if there was a more precise method than "grab and wiggle", which is why I asked) And there are no cracks on the enhaust manifold (which I think is weird.., most are cracked at least slightly, which is "normal" ) Still working on the pics..
