A few curious questions

So a couple weeks ago I had to make a quick run home from work and get back as fast as I could during lunch break and didn't have time to fill my tank back up and I was on almost empty. I decided I would take care of it after work when I got out. I ended up having to stay late and when I left there weren't any close by gas stations open, so I tried getting to the nearest one when it started to stall out and lose all power. I coasted into the gas station and filled up the tank, but it still had no power and was misfiring like crazy, I could barley make it home. I did a compression test and the rear rotor had zero compression. So I am guessing I obviously have a blown motor now, was this my fault? Was it related to the lack of fuel? Lemme know if you could.

I also have another question cause iv'e been reading through the FAQs and other websites and its hard to get good component identification on some things, I got a 86 with a 87 turbo swap I bought and this guys got pressure switches and wires unplugged, a half assed emission deletion and I'm having a bit of a hard time trying to figure out what can be plugged off and what cant, and I got a broken twin scroll actuator.. is that the same as a wastegate? If I leave it wired open wouldn't the turbo never spool? This project is a disaster.

If you were not in boost when the engine went I highly doubt any detonation would have been strong enough to take out an apex seal, if so you have other issues going on in your engine that needed addressed. if you were in boost that is a different story..

also.. twin scroll is not a waste gate, it blocks only 1 of the 2 inlets to the hot side of the turbo for faster spool up. Then it opens both inlets for high end flow.. it's OK to and I recommend removing that whole system.

What other things could I address? I mean there is nothing besides a blown apex seal that would give me zero compression right?

I figured you would answer with first stating either yes i was in boost or no i was not. my answer depends on your reply

As I was talking the guy I bought my old N/A off of the car was idling and it died, I had to go get gas before I bought it. It was fine for 70+K miles.

I already got gas for it, now its running like complete **** and according to the compression test it has none in the rear rotor

well it needs rebuilt regardless of the cause, since u were not in boost it was an inherent mechanical failure just waiting to happen -poor quality rebuild- no quality rebuild would fail under vacuum.. (unless foreign object entered intake) the cause could be a number of reasons but you won't know for sure until you tear the engine down.

I got lucky. My engine had 160k miles on it when I rebuild it at RP, and at about 155k miles, the leading spark plug anode on the front rotor broke off and got ejected from the exhaust port. It left a slight groove in the chrome and chipped it in a few spots just shy of the exhaust port and it didn't break an apex seal.

I wish i had pictures of the seals that came out of my car. My seals where so worn out they no longer had spring pressure from the seal springs. I don't even know how my engine ran honestly, but I still drove it back and forth to work everyday with only 60psi on average per rotor face. It even idled fine.

Interesting, I drove my N/A like a grandma. When it went I was making a left turn at a stop light.. mileage was at 99,941 just couldn't make it to 100,000. I guess that's what I get for saying... I can't bare to see it turn over to 6 digits.

God, I need to go shoot pics of the rotor housings. It ran like a precision top, yet the housings looked like chatter hell and has weird apex seal wear grooves at the edges.

Pics coming, you got to see them.

Sorry for the thread jack.

Heres the pics. Worn beyond belief. Yes, it did run and it actually ran WELL. Amazing.

In some pics you can see the obvious chatter marks and grooves along the edges and center of the housings. Front housing is front, and rear housing is rear.
