lower manifold wont fit, you use the stock T2 manifold and use an adapter to use the FD UIM, for minimal gains.

I would use an s5 LIM. You will need an adaptor.
With no mods this wouldn't be a good upgrade. But if you have many mods this only helps the car breath. GOOD LUCK

How to do it the cheap way(with out adapter plate)

this setup does not use any adapters, its a JDM S5 T2 lower and a S6 USD upper, the manifold got port matched and the holes on the upper one were opened up a little bit,i did use a T2 gasket,on the center plate the complete oil filler tube was replaced with a third gen asembly

https://www.rx7club.com/2nd-generation-specific-1986-1992-17/what-makes-fd-intake-manifold-better-than-t2s-714929/ discusses some of the differences. The FD LIM is inferior.

I wonder if there is a way to relocate the mounting holes on the lim to bolt directly to the engine?

there its only one bolt that wont go in(upper right corner)so if you get that corner of a t2 mani and welded to the fd mani it may work, but welding aluminum its a pain in the ***.

Couldn't you just drill a hole? Or will it not reach?

also, i thought the ports didn't line up.
