I cant speak for the FC intercooler but the FD intercooler sucks ***. Thats the worst intercooler Ive ever seen on a car stock, especially one making that much power. I got rid of mine and am glad I did, my new FMIC is like 10 bigger than the stock one. IMO neither would be any good for a FMIC, theyre tiny. Go look up a Neon SRT-4 intercooler, its great bang for the buck and theyre everywhere because people are always upgrading them for no reason.

You just have to understand that they were designed for two completely different systems. The inlet and oulet designs are very different between the two, as the FD was designed to be a lightweight sidemount in a tight space, with short piping facing toward the firewall.
There is no point in using an FD intercooler because of that endtank design--how are you going to route pipes to it? It's factory location may bet better than the FC's (to receive cool air) but it is well known to have a big pressure drop and heatsoak easily compared to aftermarket sidemounts. Look at the sharp angle the air has to take as it enters the top and comes out the bottom.
The FC intercooler has an actual usable endtank configuration and would be better for a FMIC.
but with the price of decent quality ebay cores with cast aluminum endtanks, there is really no point in using either.

..... That fd intercooler is a joke, on a twin turbo? That's truly sad mazda I mean come on thats just pathetic.
An ebay intercooler setup would be better then the stock intercoolers from either gens put together. The ultimate setup is the greddy.

^ Thats better ...
Regarding the fd stock intercooler, it's the same size as the stock intercooler off of a little 3 cylinder turbo sprint.
To answer the OP's question. It's obvious the fc intercooler would be better, look how much more surface area there's.

I figured such. I got that FD intercooler a looong time ago when I was going to do a small turbo on my old 4 cylinder Tiburon. Bought it for 12 bucks on Ebay. When I got it, I was pissed, and threw it in my parts bin. After moving, I was going through some of my crap and got to wondering about that IC. My thought was that maybe... just maybe Mazda had a method to their madness.
But it's gay. I got it. In the lake it goes (EPA, you didn't hear that).
