FC vs SW20!!!

FC vs SW20!!!
ok- my poor little heart is torn between these two cars. obviously the FC is cheaper, and for the same amount of money i can do more with it. thats not the point. power aside (hence the posting in suspension section), can anyone provide any good input as to how these cars compare? they weigh the same and the fenders can take the same amount of tire, so it looks like it all comes down to weight distribution and suspension geometry. anybody have experiance with racing or at least "spirited" driving with both of these? im not interested in drift or drag - mostly autox, hillclimbs, touge, stuff like that.

They both are great cars, the sSW will give u more grip and oversteer due to the fact its an MR over the FC's FR layout there's more rear weight ,which give it better accel speed. Both great cars, my FC is great at tight turns. I personally dont know which has a smaller turning radius. The FC has a better weight balance than the SW
Both are MT im guessing and NA (non-turbo)
PS. I have an FC and my friend is getting a SW when he gett one ill prolly be able to give u more first hand knowlege but he aint getting if for a few more month so i guees it wount helf u much
Pick the car the best suits u as in maintnece and personal style

If money is not an issue, I would take the MR2. Here's how I see it.
I'd take an NA MR2 over an NA FC. But would take a Turbo FC over an NA MR2. But I would take a Turbo MR2 over any Turbo FC.
Seriously though, in the right hands, the MR2 is an excellent handling car. It looks better (IMHO) and the reliability/quality and interior is way better. The downsides? Its overall more expensive than the FC to get the same power and is a PITA to work on the engine. (Thankfully they hardly break down anyways.) At least with an MR2, you'd be driving more often than fixing things that go wrong on the FC...

In my opinion the MR2 is a much "nicer" car.
They are sweet cars though, can't deny that.
I'm assuming they are both NA?
If you are looking purely for speed for money, get the FC- The two are fairly even bone stock, but throw a few hundred bucks in exhaust and intake, plus little odds and ends at the FC, and the MR2 won't compare, you can ultimately make the NA FC much faster than the NA MR2.
Thats about it.

I'll pit my FC against any FD anyday though. More roomy than an FD too!!

Hope you aren't planning on putting anything else but passengers in the car - the MR2 has about NO storage room. FC has crazy amounts of room - we had a thread a LONG time ago on the FC list about "FC moving vans". I've moved recliners, chests, big TV's, you name it.
I have a lot of respect for MR2's, but there's nowhere near the amount of support for them as the FC. There's a HUGE base of FC information, parts, etc. on the internet - the MR2 has some, but nowhere near the level of the RX-7.

i had SW20 Turbo
I had a 91Turbo which I sold early this year for $ issues. I loved that car. I autox'd it 2x, and it handles great. I think the car looks a little nicer than FC (I love how the FC looks which is why i bought it), I loved the Engine in the back, and the sound of turbo spooling behind you is great. Engine is kind of hard to work on though, but honestly what car isn't? Now, I have an FC TII. I love the car. For the same price though, I'd buy another turbo SW. Since FC is cheaper, it's a different story.
TII has more power low end, However, going on highway, the SW20 has so much potential, and the Engine was rock solid. I was running 14-16psi and never once worried about the engine. That engine is Diesel. The FC I love the car but I do worry about the Engine, so I don't want to put too much load on it.
I miss my mk2, the Interior was nice (10 years old and still ooked like a new car), console was nice, t-tops were great, and the exterior styling was great.
Don't get me wrong, I'm in love with the TII now, but the mr2 was really nice. I think the FC handles better though bc of the 50/50.. mr2 was closer to 60/40. Power, i think ther'es more potential in MR2. I'd suggest 93+ thoguh, bc it came lower stock, came with differentials, Airbags, etc.
Price, you're looking to spend more on the mr2. nothing bad about mazda, but Toyota reliability certainly holds true. I have 89 mr2 with the AW11, and the engine is still runnign great at 140k.
If you're looking NA, that's great too. They're pretty cheap compared to the turbo's.
Sorry I went rambling, but hopefully i can help out since I have/had both cars your'e talking about. I love both cars. I just with the engine was as rock solid as mk2. I know it's up to the user/maintenance, but even doing that, SW engine lasts longer, and that Means a lot to me. you can pm me if you got more questions. i should stop typing now.. too long.. sorry.

just saw pic
I just saw the pic. that is a 93+, and it's turbo??(exhaust pipes) just a guess.
that car looks sweet. for same price, i'd go with the 2..
again' please no flaming cause it's just my opinion, buyt the 2 still looks as if it's a new car.. the FC's a bit more boxy, which I like, but it's not as new looking as the FD.
what is the price on them?
for me, i think the SW compares better with the FD.. I liked my SW more than a FD.
good luck and let us know what you decide

raced an SW20 NA last sat. with my 91' (streetported NA auto).. took the guy till the top of 3rd to pass me with my hold on, he was in a 5spd.. That put paied to any ideas of getting a SW20 for my next project car.

hmm, guess i should clarify a little. neither of those cars are for sale, i just put them next to each other cause theyre the same size/angle and look pretty im not looking at any specific car right now, and i have ages to decide (many many months i sit here in korea). also, the idea of this thread was to take a look at the actual performance of the two cars, all things equal. i have an 85 mr2 (n/a) and an 86 gxl, so i can compare those two. surprisingly enough i think they're very well matched.
id really like to know how an FC and SW compare in semi race trim- ie, dont care about reliabilty, interior design, etc. i do apreciate all the effort you guys have put into this so far, but i have driven a few SW's but only my one FC. lets pretend the two cars both had 300 well tuned horsepower (minimal lag, blah), coilovers, and maybe a roll cage. a good setup for a serious street/track driver. i just have no idea which would come out ahead... or so you guys think its close enough to come down to driver skill (i know it takes a different style to drive these two at their limits- found that out the hard way )

you sir are a dumbass
they still make mr2's, its called an mrs now.
the fc will give you more of what your wanting, the sw20 will give you more of a drag/drifter. if for autox get an fc, for drag or drift(showing off) get an sw20.

im imparshal, but thats just not something to post here.
and most of us fc guys dont like fd's and the same way for the fd guys. for looks and the money an fc is a bargan. Considering it will usualy last longer under hard driving than a piston engine its a real bargan.

Re: working on the MR2. It really is a lot harder to get stuff done on the MR2, but it's not always necessary to drop the engine. I spent (count them) 24 hours of labor helping a friend of mine swap his turbo out of his 93 MR2.. it should have taken less, but this was my first time, and I lacked a FSM.
I pulled my turbo for the first time on my FC the other day (to port the wastegate), and the total labor taken, for pulling and reinstalling, came to less than 2 hours.

im gonna have to disagree. i would definately take an FC over the mr2 if i was drifting, but in autox, where both cars run in B Stock, ive seen plenty of mr2's win, and the rx7 isnt even competative.
i know about the mr2's engine bay. the water pump and timing belt was pretty bad...

excuse me
excuse me Mephis, but i just bought a 7, and i didn't know 7 people liked - disliked other generations. i think that's pretty lame, for me i have pride in all generations..
well, opinions opinions, but just as josh wrote, he compares his mk1 with FC.. so i say compare mk2 with FD.
i bought TII cause it's great bargain for the price and what you get and everythign else.
so again, excuse me for liking all generations, and "thinking" that everyone else thought the same.. i would have thought one day FC owners woudl buy an FD.. but what do i know, i'm new to 7s.
my 2 cents

tko211, i know just how you feel. I have a modded TII right now and I love it, but I love FD's too, always have. I just like every generation in their own way, they all have their own thing that makes them special. Some day, pretty soon I will be going for an FD though.
