fc tranny question...

i have a s4 gxl and my tranny is going out. im looking to get another one but i needed to figure out which trans i have because i have an s5 shifter on my s4. so my question is are s4 and s5 shifters interchangable on transmissions or do i have an s5? i want to keep my s5 shifter if possible. which trans do i look into getting...? thanks

the shifter themselves are different so no, the shifter can't be interchanged between an S4 and S5 but someone could have swapped the shifter itself. the threads on the S5 are much smaller than the S4.

only way to know if it has an S5 tranny is by looking at the tranny mount on the transmission. the S4 is a square type mount onto the tranny where the S5 has a V shape. if you get the tranny mount with the transmission then you don't have to worry about it.

neither is better than the other. there is some ideas that the later one has more durable cone syncros though but i believe that was only between S5 and S6 where the change came into effect.

This is confusing...first you say the shifter is different and can't be interchanged, then you suggest that someone has done just that.
Isn't the only difference between S4 and S5 parts the shift **** thread and the presence (or not) of the locating pin bush?

Karack, are you just talking about the shift ***** not switching? S4 & S5 shifters themselves can be switched. I have my original S4 NA transmission's shifter in my S5 TII transmission due to the fact that the existing S5 one was mangled. There's nothing different about the extension housings that would prevent interchanging a shifter of a different series.

And as far as internal trans differences, they're very minor. Some 5th gear ratio differences, different speedometer gears depending on model (swappable) and some unknown internal differences for convertible transmissions. They're actually a different model from the NA coupe transmissions.

i ask the question before. and i was told they are the same. the only thing that isn't are the auto ones are shorter and with bolt to the N/A diff. and the TII ones are thicker with a wider bolt pattern on the diff. the auto ones will slide into a TII trans. tried it. thought it was a TII driveshaft but my friend was wrong

sorry, the shift ***** AND shifter is different, coinciding with the first thing i said. the shifters can be swapped WITH the *****.

meaning if you try to put an s4 **** into an s5 car it will be sloppy and not thread at all, vice versa you wouldn't be able to thread an S5 **** into an S4 car because it is too small.
