Fault codes

I am trying to determine the cause of fumes in the car. Before I go and replace the cat, I need to find if my sensors are working properly. I have an 86 GX non turbo. Is there any way to run a sensor check ( like on a GM vehicle ) with a jumper? Otherwise sensors can be costly along with a new cat
