Fan thermostat idea..

Fan thermostat idea..
I am thinking of running a relay to the stock fan power line on my FC, in order to power the Perma-Cool that I have. Basically, when the stock fan turns on (about 1/4 indicated), the Perma-cool would turn on.
Any thoughts, suggestions?

Well I can't remember the reason taht was given exactly but it will not run in some cases like: No A/C running, WOT, etc. I guess you could use the spot where the sensor is at but I wouldn't use THAT sensor. Just use a variable thermostat and change it untill you get the fan to turn on at the optimum temperature.

Well the fan comes on when the engine reaches a certain temp, and it always has. I dont have the AC installed, so thats not a factor. And under WOT, I dont need an E-fan running anyways. Only during idle. Is the fan running in a manner its not supposed too?

I did experiment with that idea. I have abandoned it in favor of other methods. I had several concerns.
The wiring to the a/c/ fan did not seem adequate to supply a 20 amp spal fan. I think the stock fan fuse is 15 amps. But even if I replaced it I wasn't comfortable with the wiring or the stock relay.
The stock fan switch comes on at something like 205 degrees. As far as I was concerned that was too hot.
I should post some pictures of my set-up someday.

Good idea.
The OEM efan assists cooling when the AC is on. It also will come on with AC off. This is when the coolant reaches a certain temp.
If you know the temp that the stock fan kicks in, there is no reason not to use it as a relay trigger for your aftermarket fan. I was also under the impression that there were several temps to choose from(contact dealer for info--compare auto/t2/s4/s5....). I don't think that 205F is too hot. It also depends on where it is measured. It could also be an old switch beginning to fail.
I believe that the temp sender/switch.... is the extra connection on some water pump housings. Mine didn't have it(91 vert 5 speed). I have seen some automatic RX7s with the OEM efan. Whats your application?

I agree the wiring would not support the Perma-cool fan, thats why I was opting to run a relay off of the harness, then run the fan straight to the battery. Keep in mind that the radiator currently installed (K2RD) keeps the car PLENTY cool during normal driving, where a constantly running e-fan is not needed. And an "On/Off" switch for the car is NOT an option.
DeadRX7Conv:
I have the connector on top of the water housing. Application is a TII (88) with a perma-cool fan and the K2RD radiator.

Really? Thats not good news to me then. That thing ran all the time when I had the stock fan clutch/radiator/shroud installed. Hmmmm... Course now it wont turn on at all unless I back the E-fan thermostat back and let the gauge warm up to 1/4 indicated.

According to the FSM the temp switch on the filler neck turns the fan on at 207degF and turns it off at 194degF. As Scott said, that's too hot. The stock electric fan is only supposed to work as a back-up for the main fan and to improve A/C performance.
Don't be cheap. Buy a decent thermoswitch.
