Fan Questions

The fan in my 87 RX is working fine but seems a little weak when it comes to cooling my engine. What would be another good option to use instead of the stock one? Sould I get an electric fan? or Should I just get a larger on that fits in the place of the old one?

Fan Shroud Question

In another post I mentioned that I had taken of the shroud for cleaning purposes. I did clean it but in the mean time I ran the car and it overheated. I actually wanted to take the shroud off and throw it away but then the car was overheating. Does this piece really make a difference? What would happen if I were to add an electric fan, would I still keep the shroud? Would I still need it? Thanks a lot

#1 you may wish to search on aftermarket fans. The search function is found in the upper right hand corner of the page.

#2 if the stock fan is working correctly, you will not gain anything going to an aftermarket or other electric type fan other than a little more room to work in and added complexity in the wiring. There are only very very minor HP increases when using an electric fan, however the additional electrical load on most FC's is enough to over draw the stock charging system, requiring at the very least an used or new upgraded alternator.

#3 use of the stock fan requires the shroud for proper cooling. A shroud designed for the fan would also be required with any electric fan for proper cooling

if you keep the stock fan you will need the shroud, but if you get an efan you can ditch the shroud. Some people use fans from fieros and some others cars. Try searching for efan or electric fan mod.

The stock clutch fan needs the fan shroud. It is up to you whether or not you run a shroud with an electric fan but a fan with a shroud will be able to do its job much better than one without.

Why do you say that? What symptoms are you experiencing? There's nothing wrong with the fan itself. As long as the thermoclutch is healthy there's nothing that'll work better.

If you're seeing the temp gauge climb when you're idling or driving slowly, then the thermoclutch may be on the way out. Due to the cost of replacing the it with a new one from Mazda, it's usually more cost effective to replace it with an electric fan.

If you're having cooling problems at speed or under load, it's not the fan.
