fan on intercooler?

Has anyone ever thought about doing this to your intercooler? I've been searching through ebay and have seen a couple of them with fans on their fmic. Is this a good Idea or a bad one. I guess only reason it would be bad because it would be pulling alot of amps from the alternater. Other than that do you think you could do something like put a thermastat on the fmic to go on and off with differant temps? Just a thought. THanks.

If the IC was in a place where I didn't get fresh air at high speeds it might be helpful. I would say pointless on a FMIC. Top mount?

well same thing for radiators but I guess the fan cuts off at high speeds. Top mount might be cool because it will force the cold air from the hood scoop onto the front the tmic.

i've seen them on a top mounts, and it seems to me like a good idea. Front mount, just seems like a band aid for a bad design.

gotcha, so what about a fan in the back of the fmic? this way it would not prohibit air from reaching it but would provide extra cooling from the side that doesn't get that much air? Just another thought.

This is something's I've been seriously considering as a way to reduce the effect's of heatsoak on the TMIC. Because of the reduced airflow at low speeds, hot air air off the engine can rise through the IC, heating it up and reducing it's ability to absorb heat from the intake air. By using a fan that triggers from core temp (not intake temp), this should be minimised.

The hard bit has been finding a suitable fan. There's no room for a fan underneath the IC so it must be a pusher fan low enough to fit under the hood scoop and it can't be more than 6" in diameter overall to sit flush on the core. I'm hoping to find a suitable motorbike radiator fan that can have it's blades removed and reversed to turn it into a pusher.

There's no need to do this to a FMIC because they shouldn't suffer from heatsoak this way.

couldnt you use PC fans? I think you could get a couple of 80mm fans (~3 inches) and wire them in series, and then to either a temp sensor or RPM switch or just a manual switch inside the car.

no 80mm fans don't have near enough cfm. you can find some that have higher than others but they don't have enough I wouldn't think, I'm a computer tech so I see those things all the time and if its not enough cfm you would be fighting the next thing would be bearings going bad. I was thinking something more along the lines of a secondary fan like on our sevens. It is a blower motor and it looks about the same size as the intercooler and I don't beleive its six inches wide. What do you think?

I've thought of putting a fan between the IC and radiator to help cool engine better. Not really for the IC, though I would think it would move air slightly.

Toward the radiator. The radiator is what suffers with a fmic.

I've got an auxillory fan on the rad right now pointing toward the rad. The guy before I owned it wired it constantly on but oh well guess its better an nothing.

Because they're got designed to work with any resistance in front of them (i.e. you'll get hardly any airflow). Plus, the chances of them surviving long in a hot engine bay are slim, not to mention any rain entering the hood scoop...
