Factory Workshop Manual VS Factory Training Manual??

Are they different? If so, how? (I've noticed the training manual is 3-hole punched and has no binding...) Thx!
-I don't have either one, YET...I've come across both online so had to ask...

workshop manual is what is used for any and everything single tear-down/repair/assembly aspect of the car.

The training manual lists many (but not all) of the specifications of the car, and various methods of testing/diagnosing some of the main systems of the car. In fact, all the info in the training manual is pretty much found in the workshop manual.

The training manual seems to focus on changes from the prior version so the S5 training manual explains the dual sensor TPS and the electric OMP. It also explains how some of the systems work. Understanding how the system works allows the tech to uplevel the diagnostics above mindlessly following the steps in the Factory Service Manual.

Hailers is a walking S4 training manual.

the turbo section of the s4 aussie training manual found online is mine ( with my notes scribbled in it ) .. it mainly documents changes from previous HB cosmo RESI engine to the s4 ,, and changes between the NA and the turbo... hidden in it is lots of facts you wont find in a service manual

-- god only knows where you will find the full copy,,, as its an OZ version specific as in 1985/6 ,, we get the first full ecu controlled versions ( and turbos a year before the US )

as is ,, the turbo version i provided for upload is the only known copy,, havent seen another

having read every training manual available on the internet for any rotary (including barely comprehensible Japanese stuff on the 20B Cosmo), I do not agree with this. Maybe 10-20% of the training manual stuff is available in the workshop manual. The training manual explains how and why system on the car actually work. Look at the suspension section of the FC training manual and in the workshop manual. They are completely different. The training manual explains how the toe and camber change under different driving conditions.

The workshop manual tells you how to install and remove something, or check whether it is in spec of not. There is a small overlap with the training manual in some areas, but for the most part they are very different documents. Here's another example. If you read about boost control in the s5 training manual, it will tell you how to check the boost control solenoid. It won't tell you how it actually works though:

The same applies to new cars. This shows the valve timing/cam phasing range for BMW N20 (new turbo 4 cylinder) and N55 (current turbo 6 cylinder) engines.

If you want to learn how really cars work, read every training manual you can find across manufacturers... sometimes they are mixed in with the service manual. I have put together a GIGANTIC collection of these things. They are almost always a better source than your average car forum writeup or Wikipedia article. Like if you want to know a modern diesel actually works, or how a modern infotainment data bus works, it's all there... you just have to know where to look.

I stand corrected! D'oh! I only have the S4 training manual and I breezed through it. It looked like most of what was in it is in the factory manual.

Time for more research!
