Eyes Wide Open - stuck-up headlights!
Looking for some help. What's usually the cause for the light doors to stay up? Have removed headlight switch from dash and tried another one (used) but noticed both switches would open and close the doors intermittent when plugging in the harness part way! When fully plugged in the doors stay open.
Two bad switches? Is the relay for the light doors in the switch, or is there another relay? I've seen quite a few 1st and 2nd gen's with this problem.
Thanks, buc7

I just had a problem with my lights, and it was mechancal, not electrical. The hinges on the mechanism were rusting up a bit. I had to disassemble the lights and regrease the pivot points. Now it works great.

if it happens to both it's most likely electrical... so check the voltage at the lights when you flip the switch. If their not getting power, you got a starting point... Also check your grounding from the battery. Poor grounding is common on these cars.

There is a headlight relay on the cross member at the front of the engine bay. Go to the FSM at iluvmyrx7.com and follow the trouble shooting procedure to find the problem. These are excellent diagnostic procedures and helped me determine why my headlights would not raise and my brights would not work. I have an 89 GTU and there are 3 relays you'll have to refer to the FSM for your model FC to determine which is the headlight relay and which is the dimmer relay, the other, round relay on my car is the A/C relay.
Also does the washer switch on the left side of the instrument cluster work to lower and raise your headlights? They may be out of phase and just need to be reset. To do this you should turn the light switch off; disconnect the negative battery cable; remove the fuse in the fuse block in the engine bay; then manually crank the headlights closed. Replace the fuse, reconnect the neg. battery calbe, and turn the headlights on. This will put them back into the proper phase with the switch position.

I busted one of the headlight retract motors on some snow plow ice. Turns out, its much much more convienient for night driving to have teh headlights stuck up than down. I've yet to fix/replace the motor, so i've the headlights stuck up too... It doesn't look good, but its best for night driving-- compared to stuck down that is.
