Expert help needed please- semi running TII

Got a chance to work on the car a little today...

Heres info on it thats helpful to know when thinking about my problem: its an 87TII w/ a 89jspec engine. 87TII ecu/wiring/manifolds. tested compression and it is good. walbro 155 fuel pump. no emmissions, gutted cats. custom turbo inlet duct. rebuilt fuel injectors. I used the 89 primary fuel rail (lower one) b/c the pulsation damper screw was out on the other one, the secondary rail and pressure regulator are from the 87. I get good spark from all coils. ECU re-grounded. resistance is good for the AFM, coils, TPS and that resistor relay

Car did not run when i got it, but quit running b/c of bad coolant seals.
The problem: car is hard to start, and when it does it runs like ****-will not idle, runs rough and will not rev past ~1000 rpms. i have to keep it going by pressing throttle lightly. When I take out the fuel pump relay under steering column and crank it over to unflood it, it will start up for a few seconds and run until it runs out of fuel. THE CONFUSING THING: for these few seconds that it runs w/ fuel relay out it WILL idle and it WILL rev past 1000rpms. I hit throttle and it revs up happily (almost), then runs out of fuel and cuts off.

I'm very confused, I have tested so much on this piece of **** and put so much work and money into it. I do not have a fuel pressure guage, i'm about to buy one if no one has any ideas on this. With the symtoms it has I'm hoping it is a tell tale sign that points to a bad component or something.

Sorry for long post, but I'm trying to provide as much info as possible
As always, thanks in advance for any help
Mike

wow. somone else has my problem too!!! I just swapped in a s4 jspec engine

Try this:
start your car up with your foot on the gas and the fuel pump on. let it rev to over 2.5k when it first starts up then gradually let it down. Mine still wont Idle below about 1400 rpms, but I just set the main Idle adjust screw to that. This way I can at least have it running to do tests and figure out the problem.

Ill pm you if I figure it out. If you do, then could you shoot me a pm as well? Thanks,
Chris

For starters you HAVE to get new plugs, even though they look good doesn't mean there not torch'd....Sounds like they are....Buy new plugs and take it from there....

If its flooded the only thing you can do to un flood it is to squirt 1 once of tranny fluid in both rotor housings, that will clean that fuel out, and might even start up, but will smoke like a bitch if you get to much inthere, but as I said if the plugs are gone your problem before will return....try that and let us know.....Brad

I'm just wondering if it could be the AFM or the connection to it. When I forget to plug in my AFM and try to drive around, that happens to me. Try unplugging it and see if it is different. If you have a fuel pressure gauge fuel pressure will drop to 0 a sec after the engine starts.

AFM is plugged in. spark plugs and wires are new.

CAR WILL NOT IDLE. IT WILL NOT REV UP PAST 1000RPMS. ive had it running several minutes like this, applying light throttle. WHEN I TOOK THE FUEL PUMP RELAY OUT, THE CAR IDLED AND WOULD REV UP TO 3K RPMS UNTIL RAN OUT OF FUEL. this is the only time its ran decent, and it was by accident that i discovered it

FLOODING IS NOT THE PROBLEM HERE

timings good enough to run. i put CAS in right, but need car running to use light.
chris- i dont think we have same prob, i wish someone else was in my boat though. might be intake leaks, maybe not. keep at it

can bad fuel pressure reg. make pressure go too high? thats about the only thing i can think off. would make sense... fuel relay unplugged, car only runs when pressure drops.... am i on to something???
