Smile Is the exhaust ground necessary?

Is it important to ground the O2 sensor, or are there redundant grounds that make grounding the exhaust unimportant?

Thanks,

Matt

Which ground do you speak of? The one connected to the driver's side muffler? I have often wondered about that wire...

hmmm...

The exhaust is bolted to the engine, the engine is connected to the frame...therefore grounded...

The extra ground is just for an extra ground, its easier if electricity has an option of where to ground itself...less bad things can happen.

Its not that much of a pain to keep the exhaust ground anyway.

That ground helps prevent static electrical charges and engine noise on the stereo system.

Its very common on all cars built after 85

Without it, i suffered the 3,800 rpm hesitation that people here often complain about.

How do you ground it when you have a single exhaust, going out the passenger side???

Run another ground strap/braid at the muffler.

That is not correct. There are gaskets that reduce the ground potential as well as any corrosion will reduce ground potential. And anyone that has looked at there exhaust can see the corrosion on the bolts and nuts.

I would bet that any exhaust that has been on car for more than 2 years would have only have half the ground potential at the muffler if the engine was the only ground.
