the check engine light could be caused by many things. I have a code list and how to on my site for 89-91 cars

http://www.1300cc.com/howto/how2/codes.html

if you have an 86-88 then you need a factory checker to test.

wow, great help!

even though i havent' done it, and not sure whether it work, but it sounds like the thing i just need.

Thanks guys, you guys are nice and knowledgable.

uh.........i have some idle problem.....can you guys give me some hint?

The thing is that the engine idle fine with either or both fan/ac and headlight on. Without either or both, the engine will start idle weak and eventually die out. As soon as you turn on either the head light or fan, the idle goes back to normal again. It's very weird, hope someone here has the answer.

thanks a lot

man, you guys are the best. I find the problem.

the problem is the "intake air thermoSensor" (engine)

so....now i know the problem, but how do i fix it? Can i just pick up a air thermo sensor from Pepboys?

What's the difference between "intake air thermoSensor" (engine) and "intake air thermoSensor" (AFM)

thanks again

The MAF air temp sensor never goes bad, and also cannot be replaced without replacing the whole MAF. The engine one is on the back of the intake manifold right above the oil filter on the 89-91 n/a's. I dont know about the other models. Those air temp sensors are $51 new from the dealer, and do tend to fail occasionally.

Thanks MazdaSpeed. Now, is there any generic one that's cheaper? or an upgraded one. I would hate to spend extra money just because it comes from the dealer. Peace

If you have an 86-88 you can make a code checker for a few dollars. The details are at http://www.teamfc3s.org/info/article...odes/main.html .

just get the mazda one, I doubt you can get one anywhere else anyways. it's normaly best to stick to real mazda parts, even if they cost more. they will work better and last longer.

I agree. I doubt there are any aftermarket ones, and the mazda one isnt that bad, $51. Probably wont have to replace it for another 15 years.

yamatokh,

I have downloaded the procedure to read ECM trouble codes for your year car. However, I forgot where I got it from. I will send it to you - check your PM. If anybody else wants it, let me know, I will send it. This is for 89-92 REX's.

Irv, Keith's dad

Um... Never mind, I just noticed Scott 89t2 's post. Helps if you read page 2!

Are you sure it's just not disconnected? That will give you the code. Those sensors rarely go bad.
