Glass pack just means the muffler itself is packed with fiberglass, kind of hard to tell. I was given a car that had 3 glasspacks, two on the ends of each muffler before the tips, and one before the Y pipe, and it sounds pretty damn good!

If he wants a good performing, well built, nice sounding muffler for a cheap price he should look into Magnaflow and Borla.
You want to avoid the "louver core" glasspacks. When you look through the muffler, some are regular tubing with holes in it, and others have "louvers" or little fins sticking up - these are ones to avoid.

My car has glasspack mufflers. Only reason is because they are easy to get and are cheap. Being stainless steel is cool too. I also plan on adding a glasspack before the Y-pipe to replace my hollow cat. Sounds alright I guess.

One glass pack will definatly sound like a rotary. Especially after it breaks it, then it'll sound like a pissed off mesquito :-D I'm guessing the glass pack where the cats should be on my other 7 are what fixed the misquito sound (sort of like a presilencer), it sounded pretty deep but not honda style. One glasspack (just a single mounted near the end) will sound damn good at first, but after a while they start to sound like a weedwhacker on crack.

A glasspack before the Y pipe will probably die pretty quickly (depends on the quality of the muffler). Glasspacks after the Y pipe will probably be fine, especially if they are the straight through variety. I have been running a pair of glasspacked stainless mufflers for 3 years, and have been very happy with them. EVERYONE who has heard my car says it's on of the best sounding RX-7s they've heard. However, this summer I will be eliminating the mufflers altogether. Just straight 3" turbo back, splitting to a 3" Y pipe exiting directly in the stock locations. Can you spell loud?
