Engine and tranny install on jackstands?
How hard is this to do? I have air tools just no lift. Im going to be putting a t2 motor and tranny into a t2 body. What I would like to know is what all is involved in doing this? Is there any site with a type of walk through or any info?
Sorry for the newb type questions. Im an fd guy and have just purchased a t2 so you will be seeing more of me .
Thanks for any help.

There's a clutch change walk through I used somewhere around here, that'll be basically what you need.
I changed my N/A clutch with just jackstands/ramps. I only had 2 other people helping me. I lifted, somebody else lifted from inside the car, and the other person pushed the engine block to help align it.

I pulled and reinstalled my engine/tranny as a unit with the car on the ground (jacked it up first to disconnect all the crap underneath, of course, then set her back down) from a stationary chain hoist...Actually pushed the car back as the engine/tranny came out. Clearances were tight, but manageable...

I've done all my work on jackstands only. From 5spd swap, to differential swap.
It just depends on motivation and your ability to do work on your back. I know plenty of car guys who said they would have never attempted it without a lift. Pussies.
Swapping out the rear-dif is complex in how its held up. Once you know what you're doing its easy, its just that you really can't tell the path to go when you're under the car. Once you divised a path, its all systematic and quick.

Knowing you have to do something you don't want to do (change exhaust gaskets for example) sucks, but has to be done sometimes.
If you live near the middle of noplace, take above said time to set asside, and multiply by five. If you need to source parts in said middle of nowhere, give yourself a looooong time.

Here's from memory:
Useful things:
Check if the tranny fill plug will open. If so, drain all the tranny fluid.
Steps:
Take off the slave cylinder
Take out the shifter (3 bolts)
Take off the exhaust
Take off the driveshaft
Unplug all of the wiring on the tranny
Take off the starter
Unbolt the tranny

Working with jackstands
Only real men work this way, no lift needed
I basically had to bench press mine up to engine height and then use my knees (that hurt) to guide it in. Not sure if you want to try that with a T2 tranny though, the n/a one got real heavy after holding it awhile.

hahahah you guys rock. my horror story goes as follows. got a car that needed a clutch . so i did the light weight flywheel to . well after much cursing and about 2 weeks up in the air. and the tranny comming out about 4 times. oh did i mention i have a stone driveway ?? i got feed up with nobody wanting to help me anymore that i dropped the tranny by myself. pulled it out .. basically benched that bastard and put it down (mean while the whole time the car is up on ramps and jack stands) fixed the problem and still no one wanted to help so i benched that tranny up again and semi locked it in and slide the jack under there. got a bar .layed it across the colunm inside the car where the shifter is. and used a rachet strap and pulled it up. got it in place and bolted her down .. man i hate lazy friends . heheheheheheh .. but kenneth is the man .. the only way to fix a car is on your back with your own 2 hands .. sorry had to vent

Yeah, after you remove/reinstall the tranny a couple times it becomes systematic. I could have my tranny down in 15 minutes after getting the car on stands. It gets easy, and albeit a lift would be nice, I know what i've done without it, and I'm not worried that I dont have one.

Then the engine tranny bolts.
Since everything was removed less than 5 months ago, its not hard.
Jack up the tranny, 4 tranny crossmember bolt adaptors (5spd swap), and finaly yank backwards and lower the jack.
Done.

haha, man i feel you. just a pair of jacks and a couple jackstands will do the job.
