Engine Rebuild Kits

I have tried searching but couldn't find exactly what I was looking for.

I have decided to rebuild the engine in my 87 Turbo II. It hasn't blown yet but I have figured that its prolly best to do it before it goes. Here are my questions. I looked into the atkin's rebuild kits and there is a $200 dollar difference between the turbo and the non turbo kit. I was under the impression the internals were the same minus the compression ratios.

1)What are the diferences between the kits?

2)Would it be cheaper to just individually buy the components?

3)Are there any parts that are reusable? I know that the water seals are probably pretty weak.

Thanks in advance

You need to wait till you open up the engine and then decide on what to get. If the motor is still running, you might salvage a few things so i would not get a full rebuild kit if i were you. corner and side seals could be reused as well as the oil control rings.

The only problem I have is I am unsure as to whether I'd be able to identify failed components. Thanks for the advice, I will wait till I tear her open before I order anything. What parts usually have to be replaced?

Get a haynes manual or download the factory manual. You will have to clean the seals and then check the dimensions to see if they are within spec. By the way, atkins sells a video for step by step procedure so it really won't be too bad. You will need a few special tools though. If you just want to freshen up the engine you can look at atkins minimal kit option and maybe get new apex seals also. If you really want it to be like new, you will have to replace the rotor housings but at $400 a pop, that's not an option for me!
