Engine problem...

Last week, my 86' rx7 non-turbo, choked on me. The engine will still start up but will blow out white smoke.

Here's what happened:

First of all, smoke started coming out from the engine as I pulled into my driveway. When I opened the hood, smoke was coming out from the right side of the engine under the oil filter area. It smelled like coolant. And sure enough, all the coolant was sucked dried from the coolant tank and was flowing from under the car like water! So then, I just left it like that because even at that stage, the engine was able to be started again! So, I just added more coolant and let the car sit there until the next morning!

I started the car up and no smoke was visible anywhere! Then, after driving for about 15 minutes and I was already on the freeway going to work, I started to see smoke, white smoke coming from my exhaust. Instead of going to work, I decided to turn around and went straight home instead, which lasted about 30 minutes or so. At that point, I felt the car had lost some power. On top of it, there was noises coming from the engine. As I was making my way home during those 30 minutes, large amount of white smoke came out from my exhaust constantly. Finally, I got home and turn the engine off. Crackling noises came from the engine and I thought to myself, "that's not good"! So then, I just left the engine there to cool off and waited until the next day!

The next morning came fast and went to check the car and engine. When I checked the coolant tank, it was still full from when I added the previous day, which made me worried why it was smoking really bad the previous day! Then, I went to check the oil and to my suprise, it was completely GONE!! So I went and bought some oil and lube it down. I started the engine and it choked a little, but eventually it started back up. I left the car and didn't check back until I got back from work that same day! To my surprise again, there was indication of oil leaks underneath the floor. Whatever oil I added that day was all gone! So now, I just left the car alone.

To make this story short now, (I'm sorry for writing such a long story, but there's no way to make it clear), I don't know what to do now! Could someone help me or point me toward the right direction as what to do? Should I have a mechanic look at it or have the engine replace! What's my option looking like?

I would appreciate it in advance!

well you obvously got an oil leak, did you put the drain plug back on. so your saying all 4qt's of your oil are gone? from sitting? you have a bad oil leak man. as for coolant coming from the left side of the engine its probalby the heater hose. why the hell did you not pull over when you saw smoke. genius

coolant smoke in the exhaust (white smoke) = blown coolant seal = blown engine. I know you dont want to hear that, but thats the facts. Theres no other explanation (that i know of).

the 'coolant bottle' is actually an overflow. the coolant seal is a seal inside the engine, and its eroded or broken causing coolant to leak into the engine and the coolant system is pressurizing, and pushing coolant through the radiator cap into the overflow bottle, thats why its full. I'm not sure where coolant is coming from behind the oil filter area, but its possible a heater core hose that busted under the pressure. Is there coolant inside your car under the dash?

As for the oil leak, im not sure. you might have lost an oil control ring in the engine as well, or it might just be low because you or the previous owner never filled it. you do know that these cars regularly inject oil into the engine and the oil needs to be topped off every time you fill the gas, right?

anyway, find someone who can rebuild your engine or get you a working one. good luck!

I have another explanation - I tore down a perfectly good engine to replace coolant seals because I was getting white smoke from under the hood and out the back of the car and it smelled like antifreeze. Bought a hoist, bought a used engine, finally got the engine all taken apart and found out I had a coolant line busted under the intake manifold that was dumping water down onto the exhaust manifold. Lot's of steam under the hood, plus with the engine running, it blew the steam under the car all the way to the back, so from inside the car it looked like white smoke coming out of the exhaust. So after buying a used engine, an engine hoist, and a day to pull the car and engine apart, I replaced $1.50 worth of hose and it's good as new.
