Engine not running - What am I looking at?

I am considering buying an '87 for $1000 (Canadian). Car is black with a blue cloth interior, 5-speed, factory alloys, winter rims & tires, 135,000 KMS (about 75,000 miles), been oiled yearly for at least the past 4 years, painted once (from white), only rust is bubble on one quarter (apparently - haven't seen it yet...). Trouble is it doesn't run. This seems to be an alright car for the money with the exception of that. Are there any oddities that only guys in the know (like all of you...), that would prevent and engine from running - that can be quickly, easily and cheaply checked / repaired??? Or am I looking at a definate engine rebuild or swap?
Also....any interesting 'insider info' on these cars would be greatly appreciated - like how are they in the snow (sorry....no winter car $$), do they handle nicely, what's with all the engine fires, etc.?
Thanks in advance for any and all assitance you could provide.

what does this mean? i hope it doesn't mean what i'm thinking it does ...

anyway, some background info would be necessary before anyone could attempt to suggest what may be wrong.

does it turn over at all? when did it stop running? under what conditions? did it overheat?

that kinda stuff ...

Thanks for the welcome, it's nice to be here. It meant the car is pretty low mileage - especially to you US guys... ;-) Also meant that the girl who drove it owned it for 4 years, and in that time, had it oiled (to protect against rust?) yearly.
At this point, I can't relay anymore info - sorry? Wish I could, but I can't.

Alright, I went to see it today. Brand new tires, exhaust, and rear brakes. Looks in pretty decent shape. 13B motor.
She said it was running poorly one night, so she parked it and shut it off - went out the next day and it wouldn't start.
Her boyfriend (a mechanic...) said it was either something with a 'spring' IN the motor that wasn't triggering a spark...., or possibly the APEX seals.
Any opinions??
