Engine Fire (pics)

Yup - looks like pulsation dampaner started it? thank god i have some bright people in the area to help me get her back together. Looks like all the vac hoses, a coolant line, a fuel line, the injector wires, and injectors to me. We did save the engine, she's a-ok.

TO the people who like to bitch about the PD bolt fix:

I'd rather have an "improper" bolt than to have this result. DO what you gotta do.

Looks like youre gonna need all new injectors, harness, vacuum hose job, and a lot of cleaning.

They all have the FDP on one end and the banjo bolt on the other. You are just taking the FDP off of your car and putting a banjo bolt from another in it's place. Atleast that's how I understnad it.

finally, tell us how it happened! What were you doing, what did you noticed, and what did you do about. I love the stories!

i had just got it all through inspection, plates, etc

Had been driving for a good 2-3 weeks, even went on a 120 mile road trip and back.

Drove to national guard (about 35 miles away) on Sat and back, no problems.

Sunday morning, it was chilly. Temp sensor was lower than normal after 20 min on the road. I assumed due to the cold temps (maybe it was because of that) i turned on the heat for the first time, it smelled a little musty like it haden't been used in a long time. No biggie.

After about 35min on the road i pulled into my guard base, and it wasn't reving past 4k, it started sputtering and stuff like it was having trouble. And i thought that was bad =)

and when i took it out of gear the idle was funky, when it is normally rock solid.

I go down about 1/2 mile to my shop on base, and pull into my spot still with a rough idle.

My Sgt. says "hey, car sounds a bit rough" i agreed and shut it off in my parking spot. When he then said, isn't exhaust suposed to come out of the tail pipe? (jokingly)

I was like WHAT?! (thinking perhaps coolant boiled over or something - since i had seen that many a time - not from my 7 but others) and i noticed smoke had begun bellowing out from the hood scoop. We poped the hood to see flames from behind the engine against the fire wall.

I freaked out, and one of my Sgt. grabbed one of our nearby fire extingushers and tossed it to me.

Pulled the pin and shot foam all over the engine imediatly extingushing the flame.

Then we all stood around my car and admired the foam on the engine, they knew how much i loved my car since i was so excited about getting it fixed and driving it down to show them.

Then looked at my sad face and said "you know we like to poke fun right?" i noded and they started cracking up at how ironic the whole situation was.

Now i'm not someone who can't laugh at my own mis-fortune.

When life throws something like this at you, the best thing you can do is laugh, fix it, and move on =)

I was fortunate, and i learned. I'm lucky it wasn't any worse than some vac lines and hoses and wires.

Listen to Kevin over at Rotary Resurrection, He knows his ****!

I'll letcha know when she's back together.

^ i hear that. We think alike!

Too bad.. thats crazy though. How much was the car when you bought it?

And think of it this way, all you need is a fuel system rebuild! not so bad, I mean its only about 10 hours of labor

eh, picked her up for 1500, and spent ooooh, maybe a grand getting her up to par. and i'm guessing, what, 100 for hoses, and 100 for misc other hoes and wires to get her back? still under 3k in all....

Glad you saved the engine, and glad I don't have the S4 for that issue to occur.
