Electronic vehicle speed sensor rather than cable driven Speedometer

Yup, I've done it and it's OEM as ****.
The VSS from a FD is a direct bolt in after you swap the FC driven gear onto it.
It's been driving the speedo in my Miata cluster and it's dead on the money, accuracy-wise.
The unit on the left is the FD part, you can see the size difference of the gears pretty well:
Although the mounting flanges look different, the one required mounting hole is identical and no mods are necessary to fit the FD piece.

what?! clokker you holding back son!
this will be great for my rx8 6 speed vert.
but what for the gauge side? just a stock miata?
i've been told/researched that an rx7 abs hub will pulse 4 times a rev, and you can get a honda tach of a certain year that fits the FC layout and 4 pulse per rev as well.
what are you running? a miata cluster in an fc?

I have a Miata (NB) gauge cluster with the electronic speedo.
Connected to the FD VSS with the FC gear swapped on, it is dead accurate.
I have done it but credit for the initial idea goes to Ben (Rotary Evolution), who not only spotted the similarities between the parts but sent me a FD VSS to experiment upon.

I detailed my efforts here.
If I ever knew the tech specs, I've forgotten them now but I do have a suspicion that Mazda used a similar (if not identical) VSS on lots of models, which means lots of tachs probably work with it.
When I began the swap I assumed some sort of correction might be necessary- typically, putting resistors in the circuit or using a Dakota Digital box- but this combo proved dead accurate as is.
Bear in mind that other factors are in play also.
Specifically, your diff ratio and wheel size, either/both of which can throw the speed readings off.

the protege has a VSS like the FD/NB but i doubt it would fit.

i just looked and the Rx7 goes to the electric VSS in 1993. the miata uses a cable until 99, and then switches to a VSS like the FD. the Rx8 and 06 miata use the ABS wheel speed sensors, so have nothing in the transmission.

i actually heard that i can swap the 6 speed miata trans tail housings onto the rx8 and it will add provisions for a speedo gear. car is down so might as well go crazy with fixings

Worse comes worse, you can just plug up the Trans cable/sensor hole and run a GPS Speedo.
I got one that is about match box size..works good too!

No and no, actually.
The Digital Dakota (or is it the other way round?) is digital in and digital out, it won't drive a cable. It's meant to adapt different trannies to your stock- already electronic- speedo.
We had one in the swapped FD and I can't say I noticed any lag.
I have seen the kind of converters you speak of Rob, but don't know any brand names.

dakota digital is a brand, one of the products they sell is a digital to cable converter

Just throwing another option out there which may help people. Since FCs had an ABS option, installing one ABS hub (with the tone ring) and ABS VR sensor onto one spindle provides a very handy speed pulse signal for things like ECU logging.

You are the man Aaron for that idea . Now could said hub assembly give signal to say a haltech e6k and run that Acura speedo above . . My speedo is off by like 20mph with my t2 drivetrain and running 205/50/15's on 15x8's
